Mk7 air con problem

Postby Paulscarbs » Sun Sep 20, 2020 7:43 pm

My 2009 ex RAC van has air con. Worked last year.

What I have down so far:
Tested fuses and relay - fine.
Tested engine off and engine on pressure - air con is holding pressure.
Power is going to the reservoir.
No power to the compressor.

This is a two fan vehicle. One is on all the time and a smaller fan via a control unit. The smaller fan isn’t working (should it be?) it works if given direct feed.

My thoughts are an electrical issue related to the switching of the compressor.

What should I test and how do I test it?

Many thanks

When you say "power is going to the reservoir" what bit are you talking about. AC systems don't have reservoirs.

Have you checked the cab switch circuit?

And is the pressure switch giving continuity?

What pressure do you have and how you checking it?

Same happened to me a few years ago... The small air con assist fan refused to work, and so the Air con wouldnt kick in. I removed the plug to the fan and fed 12 from a battery directly onto the terminals... nothing happened, so I forced the fan with a screwdriver to turn. Eventually it started, and so I left it running for about 10 minutes. After that, once the fan had "unstuck£ it worked perfectly, once I had plugged it back into the loom plug... I did get a fault code prior to checking the fan relating to it, something like, fault on fan module open or short circuit. Have you read any fault codes ?

You cant buy a new fan on its own, its only available from Ford as a complete two fan and chassis unit.... and it very expensive.

Thanks,

NS wheel arch just in front of washer bottle. A cylinder which is connected to the air con. Power is going to this unit.

Cab switch not checked yet as lamp illuminates when air con selected. (I know this isn’t a guarantee).

Pressure without engine on is just over 30 using an air con gauge on low pressure side.

Thanks, I understand this can prevent the air con from working which is why I tested it. Fan runs freely when power applied.

I spent ages testing everything on mine, which had stopped working a while ago, but in the end, it turned out to be the compressor itself, probably the most expensive part, and the most awkward to get at  :P

I have discovered the u it near the NS wheel arch is the suction accumulator. On this is attached the low pressure switch. The high pressure switch is connected to a black unit slightly further up the wheel arch.

Question. Can these switches be removed without risk of losing refrigerant?

No response so thought I would bump this thread.

Can the high and low pressure switches be removed without loss of refrigerant?

I think I've seen before that they can but don't quote me on it.
