Ignition key and Locks ETC.

Postby tombrick1968 » Wed Nov 25, 2020 4:19 pm

Hello Everyone..
New to the forum and I thought I would begin by saying thankyou to all that have made this a very welcoming place to visit..
I have recently inherited my Sons mrk6 05 plate 85 T280 not sure what Engine Code it is Vin WF0VXXBDFV5R51055. I am sure Some kind sole can tell me what it may be?

I am hoping to keep it for a long as I can and I don't mind getting my hands oily. I have a few questions regarding keys and Locks..

On getting the van home (payment for plastering his entire groung floor might I add) I met my first snag..opening the bonnet, it took a while and plenty of wd40 to loosen the locking mech. I had to take the grill off the front so I could get lube in and around.. I want to give it a sevice, oil change filters etc. Bit of a shock to find there is no oil in the engine! No filter in the air intake! and it appears the ignition key is pretty worn and half rotates in its fob/housing. I have another key which I have yet to work out what it's for but again its worn smooth.

The ignition key will open all doors except drivers door it will lock it but not open. I am worried that the igniton key is going to end up stuck or break with trying to open..especially the fuel cap (Stiff) and revisiting the bonnet release lock.
What is the best advice..my heart tells me new key direct from Ford. I think if I get a replacement I will probably have more success with opening dodgy locks. I have read on the forum about buying cheap and programming etc..I don't have that option..plenty of tools for undoing and fixing but not programming.
Thanks for reading and all advice tips suggestions links etc are most welcome.
Keep Safe
Tom

90% of your problem is the key, it's softer than the lock internals and as a result gets very hard to turn.
I have taken " smooth" keys into Ford and they have been able to read and cut new blades. Only ever had 1 that never worked out of dozens. If you get the correct blank and are very careful you can retrieve the transponder chip from the bad key and put it in the new one.

You're in the right place mate. Welcome to the forum!

FIRST THINGS FIRST I hope you have topped up the oil and stuck an air filter in there. Get cheap oil top it up, maybe some engine flush, warm the engine up to operating temperature and drop it immediatey. If it had very low oil I wouldn't even drive it. I hope it wasn't being driven without an air filter! Just let it sit there with the topped up oil, get it hot and drop it. Then brand new oil filter and quality oil. Doesn't sound like it's been looked after too well. I would change the quality oil out again in a thousand miles. Just to get rid of as much shite out of the engine as possible. Fuel filter next.

Then worry about the key.

Thank you both for your help..
The van hasn't been looked after..I have started doing an oil change..cracked the oil filter housing trying to loosen it..oil everywhere. Got a replacement on order and more oil!!
As for the fuel filter a date written on august 2015..so that will be next once I get myself a bleeding mech sorted and have a look on youtube. onward and upward..
Thanks again

You shouldn't need to bleed the fuel system if you fill the new filter with fuel before refitting, and run the engine at a fast idle after starting, as it should bleed itself when running. If you muck it up, and the engine stops before it's bled, you can always start it on WD40 whilst it draws fuel through
