Transit turns over but won't start. Can see broken wire.

Postby bugsterbec » Mon Feb 15, 2021 10:18 am

We have a 52 plate ford transit minibus. Drove it down to the mot test station with no problems. They went to drive it into the garage and it wouldn't start. It turns over but won't fire. They don't currently have time to look at it - been there a couple of weeks already.
We (well the husband, I observe and try to make helpful suggestions) looked at it over the weekend. We could see a broken wire near the relay box. See photo. Have fixed that but still no joy. Does anyone know what this wire is for?
If he put fuel down the pipe from the air filter then the engine does catch and run for a second or two. The easy start test?
He has a diagnosistic box that we used to remove the delimiter when we got it a couple of years ago, but now we get an error code when we plug it in and it won't detect the van.
The garage assume they will need to replace the fuel pump, but unsure as it was fine until we stopped outside.

Any ideas of what we can try? (it's outside the garage and we have the key)

52 plate isn't obd compliant so a cheap reader may not read it.

That wire is a fusable link designed to short out when a glow plug fails. Glow plugs usually short out to ground when they fail.

If you don't have new glow plugs fitted then you shouldn't have the wire connected really as it may short again and drain the battery.

I never had mine connected and it never caused any running problems at all.

Changing glow plugs isn't a task to take lightly either as they can snap and turn into a bigger job.

The fuel pump if it is a tddi can simply just die, it is usually the electronic part that goes.
Is the red led on the dash flashing a number of blinks indicating a fault code?

Thank you
I haven't noticed a red led but we will go back and check.

We have connected the vcm 2 to the van before when we took the speed limit off and it worked fine. So bit weird that not working now. Would you expect to see any codes to see if the electronic part of the pump is dead (would pay someone else if needed to, to do this diagnostic).
Could there be any other fuses or relays we can check?
Is the pump we need to replace below the fusebox?

Anyone know a good place to get a new pump?

If the vcm worked before but not now then maybe reinstall the software.

The complete fuel pump on a tddi isn't cheap :(

You can get a mechanic to diagnose if the fuel pump is dead but if it is turning over but won't start but will if you spray easy start into the inlet then I'd be leaking on the pump being duff. Mechanically I think they're quite robust which only leaves the electronic part.

You can bypass the fuel filter head to see if it is passing air.

Thank you
We got the software running and one error is to do with the fuel pump but we also got
B2139/U2510 PCM ID does not match between the PCM and PATS control
Does this mean it could be an issue with the security system stopping the fuel pump working rather than the pump itself?

We have recovered the van to our house so easier to work on it.

What is the PATS LED on the dash doing when stationary, and when trying to start :?:

Fwd mk6 are prone to wiring getting chafed around the starter area wires to do with fuel pump(watch dog wire) not sure if RWD had same probs (dont know what yours is) you'd need to check pump wires thoroughly
