2013 Mk7 2.2 tdci egr cooler

Postby cledthehead » Tue Feb 16, 2021 9:05 pm

Hi, My name is Cled and im looking for some advice. Just bought a 2013 2.2tdci which looses all coolant after about 20 miles. The seller was told that it was the
head gasket but im inclined to think its the egr cooler. There is quite a bit of water dripping ot of the exhaust. I also think the coolant system might be pressurised
bu exhaust gasses. If I bypass the egr cooler by conecting the two hoses together would it be safe to drive home about 160 miles so that I can work on it properly
in my garage.

Yep, shouldn't be an issue to drive after by-passing the cooler.

Is there steam or white smoke coming from the exhaust..?? Does it smell sweet..??

Check your oil level just to make sure it's not the core plugs leaking.

My sense of smell is kaput, white smoke or could be steam & water dripping from exhaust. How dificult is it to join the hoses, any pics?.

FWD or RWD..??

Either way, just pop the two hoses off the cooler and connect them with a suitable piece of pipe and jubilee clips.

OK Bypassed the cooler and drove home 260km (160 miles) without any problem, Water temp stayed normal all the way but the expansion tank is bubbling like a cauldron. Must still be exhaust gasses entering the cooling system somewhere, any ideas? Thanks Cled.

Water pump is indeed a possibility....they're driven by the PAS and the spline between them often wears out and fails.

I wanted to post a video of the expansion tank which looks like a kettle boiling even on tickover but was told that MP4 is not accepted on the forum. Even though it looks like its boiling the temperature stays normal. To me that means there must be exhaust gases entering the cooling system.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this issue
I’ve a 2013 rwd 2.2
Bought it with engine problem, bubbling the water from the bottle, I bypassed the egr cooler with a hose, will idle at 60 degrees for an hour with no interior heating, after holding it at a Rev for a minute or two temp guage rises and interior heat starts, but lose it again once left to idle
Thanks

Bubbles in the coolant are due to the head gasket or and head and block damage.

With the coolant level being between min/max it is unlikely that exhaust enters the coolant system via the EGR heat exchanger with the engine stopped, if the exhaust system is partially blocked such as when the DPF becomes sooted up the pressure in the exhaust can reach 50 psi or more at idle, 200 psi or more at 3000 rpm, the coolant pressure is relieved at 21 psi. At idle with a clear exhaust the exhaust pressure is about < 4 psi, at about 3000 rpm the exh' press' is about 42 psi.
Due to there being numerous places where exhaust can be trapped it is likely that the circulation of the coolant is limited/stopped.

Better to start your own post re' this subject.
