MOT Fail - advice needed

Postby MattD » Wed Feb 24, 2021 11:49 am

Our 2007 mwb Transit 9 seater failed it's MOT on a welding issue and I'm just hoping that someone can offer some advice? The van was dropped back by the garage and I asked them to show me the issue but the bloke dropping it back didn't do the test and could only read what was on the sheet:

I've been under the van expecting to see something obvious but I can't. It's going back on Thursday and he said they'd need to take the bumper off to see how much work is needed but has anyone had theirs fail for a similar reason and could maybe offer advice on where to look and how much it's likely to cost?

Pictures of these areas would help
Yes transits can fail for corrosion everywhere, you don't seem to have it bad but as said pics of actual areas would help to see extent of corrosion

Unless you have a Mk 1 or 2 - spring hanger means rear leaf spring mounting area ?

I was thinking that, I bet it is osr and nsr near the suspension mount so the box section there. They should have put yellow crayon on it to id it or show you. You should show pictures or ask for confirmation from them since they failed it and also ask if it is a typo as they seem to be confusing.

Surely, it will be this area behind the rear wheels on both sides :? That's where my Mk6 failed (many years ago) It's usually the inner wings that fail on the front :|

Sorry for the rubbish photos in the dark but these are the best I can do. I will make sure that I speak with the garage tomorrow and get them to show me what they think the issue is. I do trust them however, but it's always nice to have a 2nd opinion.

I'm pretty sure it's the rear that is the issue because he said he'd have to take off the bumper to see the extent of the issue.

Bit of mis-communication, it's going in next Thursday and not today. I had a chat with the guy on the phone and he says it is the holes near to the rear spring hangers. He said that the holes are necessarily the issue but on the other side of the hole it looks like there is nothing there which has reduced the strength of that section close to the hanger. Said he needs to take the bumper off and have a proper look and go from there.

Yes, well I think so. He wants to take the bumpers off and have a look to see the extent of the damage and see how much work is required to fix it. They can do the work, just don't want to commit to a price until it's all exposed.

Technically the only repair that is needed is the hole that can be seen.

On one hand a proper repair to any rust is ideal but on the other, for the mot it is only that bit you can see.
