Winding up to start

Postby Mills » Sun May 02, 2021 5:51 pm

Hi my van is frustrating me. It has to be wound up to start. Cranked over until it catches and then runs/idles absolutely fine. Has had a new genuine filter and housing when the issue started fitted by ford tech (Friend of family is a Ford commercial tech) so was pressure bled and then started n ran ok for about a week and all started again. Battery all checks ok, turns over fine.

Have had codes checked and nothing stored/showing.

Found air in feed line from filter to pump, loose fittings so replaced these with genuine new feed and return pipes. Has been on a run but still a few bubbles at top of pipe at filter housing.

Have recently done new rocker gasket so has all new injector seals, o rings on return pipes and seals around injectors. This was done after issue started.

Had a service last week oil, filters etc after issue started.

Have checked pressure sensors on LHS of rail middle wire has 1.0v on ignition, 1.8v on start dropping to 1.3v on idle.

I let it sit for a day and removed fuel filter again and could see it was about 1/2 full so suspect air leak somewhere as fuel running back.

Any suggestions where to look first appreciated.

I always suspect the starter motor in these cases.

As they get older, they start to get tired and hard to turn, (eventually seize up), and rob power from the rest of the electrics. If the BCM doesn't "see" enough voltage, it won't allow the engine to fire.

If you don't want to buy a new one, you could try removing it, giving it a good clean up, and lube the bearings

Hi Took it off. Striped it out, clean and reassembled but no change if anything it’s clicking more than normal. I am a bit torn between battery and starter. I assume if I jump it from my car and it fires up no problem, if it’s still the same it’s a new starter. Which I must say was an awkward bugger. Still in for a penny!

Oh well, it was worth a try, but doesn't really exclude it from being the problem, sadly :?

Hi still having troubles. Was getting the P068A code constantly and occasionally the mass airflow sensor code, decided to checkout fuses, wiring etc. Anyway cutting a long story short decided to see if anything was coming out of PRV so removed the pipe and blanked it with a drill bit, started van and it was like a diesel tap! I assume this means the PRV is blown. But before I replace it I wanted to now. Should I try SCV first? Would this be the reason I cannot seem to get the air out of the fuel system or could the air cause this. Any information will be greatly Received.

If the PRV is obviously blown, I'd suggest replacing it and the SCV as a pair. The PRV usually blows because the SCV is faulty.

Hi Sorry it’s been a while! So after replacing PRV, SCV with Denso parts and successfully doing pump learn can not get injector learn to work alway code 88! Says about making sure it has over 25% in tank, running at 3000rpm for 3 minutes the idles for 30 but no joy. Did the injector leak off all ok. All the fuel lines between filter and pump/injectors are new. Injectors all coded in ok. Any ideas.

I have attached image off laptop of it idling if that gives any clues.

Thanks in advance

He said he had done in the first line of his first post.

Mills, where did you get the SCV and PRV from..?? How much did they cost..??

If the learns fail it's often because one or more of the injectors is not well....I see your #1 injector balance is well higher than the others...what were the leak-off figures..??

Hi

Scv was £60. I had a heart attack as local Ford dealer wanted around £400 for a PRV and SCV. The ones I bought were same as a colleague used on his and he had no problem so gave it a try (he’s now sold his Van or could have borrowed a few parts)

From memory each bottle had around 35-40ml in all looked even.

Thanks for replying
