P0299 turbo low pressure on 2.2 Euro 5 FWD engine

Postby beanis » Fri May 07, 2021 2:17 pm

Hi all

I have an intermittent issue with the turbo on a 2.2 2013 FWD Euro 5 engine

A while back the turbo actuator was making weird clicking sounds and throwing up the P0299 error. I took it off and the cog inside was absolutely stripped bare. I replaced the actuator and all good for a few hundred miles!

But now I got the error code again, which clears on restart. But intermittently comes back. The actuator isn't clicking like before, but is making a whining sound for a short while when I switch engine off.
Also the turbo sounds very throaty and gruff, like a low rumbling.

I am thinking that something inside the turbo is damaging the actuator... or perhaps turbo is failing?

When I remove actuator, the vane arm is free and feels good.

ANy ideas on what to investigate first?

The van apparently had an EGR Delete, and has been remapped. Would it be a good idea to reverse these things for the sake of having a van that's reliable?

No, is this hard to check?

Once I've removd the turbo i'm wondering if it's easier to put reconditioned one on rather than start dismantiling it?

have got some live data but can't make the fault come back - so not sure why it happens. Maybe likely the turbo is fooked as you say

if anyone can help me read the data of turbo, actuator and boost etc, let me know

Post the data up here and we'll take a look.

I did two screenshots but maybe easier to download the live data file here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mwhCN0HVE6H3QGjDT1IQ_l9ro8w8mBi6/view?usp=sharing
If you can make sense of it - cos I can't!
I have got in touch with martyn at Vantuner and in a week will get him to take a look too - as I'm suspicious as to what has been done to the van previously and who retuned it

Unfortunately there's no context as to what is on the traces. Half of the line headings are missing.

FRP and desired FRP are often a good place to start looking for issues.
