Reaming injector seats

Postby Erubus » Sun May 09, 2021 2:59 pm

My injector seals seem to be leaking again after only a few months. Lots of blue smoke (not all the time) and pressurised crank case.

I have bought a "universal" seat cutter set which specifically said it was suitable for a 2.2 transit engine. Only one of the cutters is the same size as the washers (15mm diameter) bit the cutter diameter steps up to 17 or 18mm almost straight away so I'm dubious it will even fit.

If it does fit, how do I go about cutting the seats without getting swarf into the combustion chamber? I don't want to have to take the head off to do it! Or are you only meant to go very gently and take the carbon off and not cut into the metal at all?

Cheers, gill

As above, a dob of grease will block the inlet hole and lubricate the cutter blade. You can scoop out the grease with most of the swarf afterwards, but whatever gets in the cylinder (it won't be much) will be burnt off immediately the engine runs :D

Perfect thanks guys

Does anyone happen to know the correct size of cutter? I'd rather know my "universal" set doesn't have the right size before I do the job than after I've started.

I believe they're 17mm flat face.

Perfect, there are various different 17mm cutters. The washer itself appeared to be 15mm of which there is only one in the set I bought. I'll get that done over the weekend.

I'm not sure if the year of the engine makes a difference, but the washers for my 2008 2.2 were:-

13.8mm O/D

7.3mm I/D

1.8mm Thick
