Air leak in the fuel system allowing the fuel to siphon back to tank..??

Before you dismiss Lord K's suggestion - have you checked it? My MK6 has exactly the same issue - can take up to about 15 turns before it starts but then is fine.

Had a look underneath and the fuel tank is damp. Pretty sure the pickup or return pipe (or both) are cracked or have bad joints and are leaking.

Hopefully going to have a look at mine at the weekend.

Mine is dry as a bone up at the fuel pump end, I assume mine is leaking at the tank end.

They don't normally leak fuel out....they leak air in, so cannot normally be seen. Check all the low pressure fuel lines, the O-ring joints on the 4 filter head supply and return lines, small O-rings on the injector leak-back lines and/or the leak-back lines themselves, cracked filter head. Air can leak in and then fuel siphons out of the filter and back to tank....it then takes a long time for the fuel to be drawn up the next morning on a cold start.

Hi Lazee,

I think you may need to explain a bit further what question you are asking. If I click on the links you posted, I just see a photo of a Transit fuel tank?

I think that other posters are suggesting that if your fuel lines are cracked/leaking, then it could be allowing diesel to drain away back to the tank when switched off meaning the lines/pump could be empty next time you try to start the van. This is why it takes a while for it to draw fuel back through and start.

It certainly sounds like what is wrong with mine.
