Little end bearing/ bottom end bearing tap

Postby Brett28 » Wed Jun 02, 2021 9:45 pm

Hi folks hope your all well. Might be a stupid question but if I unplug the injector one at a time would I be able to locate witch cylinder I have the knock/tap on??

Thankyou. If the noise doesn't go away or slightly change. So you have any ida what I could check next. I've had new timing kit all timed up correctly using pins and slackening socket bolts ect. The cams do have marks on them would that make it tap? Cheers

I assume you have a Mk7 Euro-4 ..? FWD or RWD..?? Which engine..?? You didn't say what vehicle you have.

Are all the cam followers/rollers free and smooth to turn..?? If the cams are marked it may suggest they may not be happy. Are all the hydraulic lash adjusters ok..?? Just thinking out loud for things which may cause a tapping noise.....other than a duff small or big end which would be more of a knock.

I take it that you've already checked the injector seals for blowing, and/or loose injector clamp bolts :?:

Sorry folk didn't mention the engine/van it's a 2008 mk7 2.4 rwd 100bhp. Runs an drives bang on no loss of power its had new injector seals ect. Unplugged the injectors one at a time an the noise didn't change at all. I've had a new can carrier on the van as the last one smashed. Could this of caused the lifters to brake. How would I check if it was the lifters tapping

You mentioned the cam carrier was replaced....it's matched to the cyl head...was the head replaced at the same time..?? Rocker cover has to come off to physically check rockers/lifters etc.

Curios to know how they did that without removing the head...?? Or was the head removed..??

On the rockers you'll be looking for worn/damaged rollers and mis-alignment...also poorly lash adjusters.

I took the old cam carrier and they used that ?? Does that seem wrong. Il pull them out an see if there's any signs of damage. Its really annoying as the van drives good no power loss no smoke no bad oil consumption just the tapping I just want to be 100% sure its the little end before I pull the engine to bits. I'd rather check all the little things first. But when I unpull the injector plugs it doesn't changed tge sound at all. I'm just temped to buy a new engine an be done with this one

Isit possible to see play in the little end by taking.tbe sump of and using a screw driver up the cylinder to feel for play. Forgive me if that's stupid

Unlikely as they have a "mid-sump" or as Ford call it, a "stiffener", which makes it near impossible to get to the big-ends and or pistons from underneath.

Load it to youtube and then provide a link to it here....some of the cleverer chaps on here will have a good idea of what's going on.

Lets go back to the start, did you buy it not running :?: if not was it making the noise before the chain let go :?: If the cams are marked in all probability the lobes are twisted and there is where the noise is coming from. It is not recommended to unplug the injectors when running as it can blow the pcm
