Turbo or something else?

Postby Croftylad » Mon Jun 21, 2021 6:47 pm

So the van is making a whizzing sound under acceleration. Mk7 2.4. There is some black smoke also. I took the front off the turbo where it connects to the air filter
and found evidence of oil. I also plugged it into a basic code reader which came up with fault codes for air flow meter and egr. I think its the turbo which is on its way out. Its done 147k.
I normally fix my van but I'm short on time so took it to a garage I haven't used. They wanted to put it on diagnostics before carrying out any work. The receptionist has just phoned and said the mechanic says it's the glow plugs. This has totally thrown me! Would faulty glow plugs give the symptoms I have?
Thanks in advance
Antony

I didn't think so either. I think I need a second opinion.

I would ask the receptionist to go and have a look, they may have a better idea what they're doing

Sounds more like a boost leak to me, check all boost pipes for splits.

Also this said garage sounds like halfrauds “you have a whistling noise and black smoke, you need new brake lights”

Oil in the inlett side of the turbo is from breather pipe.

Check for oil in outlett side on the turbo = worn seals in turbo..

Whissel on pressure build up = worn turbo, can require new CHRA in turbo unit.

147K suggest worn turbo..

Check boost pressure with pressure gauge or MAP data.

I just changed my turbo unit in a 2,4Tdi , due to whissel, Black smoke and wrong pressure build up.

147k doesn't mean turbo is fooked ,
I changed ma 130s turbo at over 400,000 just cause i had a 140bhp one sitting ......that turbo (400,000miles+ ) is now on another 130 called Asbo Mclooty so you can't really go by miles for condition of turbo
