Catastrophic failure ???????

Postby Havoc99 » Sun Aug 08, 2021 4:40 pm

Hello all.
A while since I last posted.
Hope you are all well in these difficult times.
My van has been running perfectly for the last year or so.....but

I went out yesterday, drove 5 miles, all ok.
Then suddenly out of the blue everything just stopped.
The engine stopped
All lights went out on the dash
Power steering stopped
Also think brakes stopped working
I pulled over and waited about 10 mins thinking about what may have happened.
Started the van & everything worked perfectly.
The engine sounded great and everything was just fine.

Move on to this morning & went out in the van.
Drove about 3 miles and exactly the same thing happened.
A catastrophic failure of everything.
Waited 10 mins, put key in ignition, started van, all ok drove another 30 miles just fine & parked up at home.

Hopefully you guys may be able to help with advice re the above problem.
At the moment I have know idea.....
Cheers

Good call, its a possibility.
Had not even crossed my mind.
My gut feeling is its electrical.
Oldish van so may well be the ignition switch getting worn.
Gives me something to start on.
Thanks

It's not catastrophic engine failure if it starts after 5mins , is the time you wait something you just do or doesn’t it start right away ??

Ok, so things have developed.
I can now not start the van at all.
The little yellow curly spring type light in the dash flashes
on and off whilst trying to start.
A friend said maybe the fuel pump ?
Does this sound like a possibility ?
How much is a new fuel pump to be fitted ?
Any ideas or comments appreciated.
Thanks in advance

After a few non starting tries the van did start for about 5 seconds then stopped again.
Looked under bonnet, nothing leaking and all looks ok.

I think it's time we ask you what model Transit it is..?? Judging from your older posts, it's a Mk6 2.4..??

Flashing glow plug light is a Mk6 thing... It doubles as a DTC light in the Mk6.

Have you had the codes read.?? Symptom is common to a dead/dying crank sensor....but a code read and live data will help.

Towed van to the garage.
Within an hour they told me the fuel pump needed to be changed £1200
I'm assuming a crank sensor would be way cheaper.... !?!?!?

Did you not get a code read before as asked on the Sept 23..?? What were the actual codes..??

Hi all.
Yes changed ignition switch, sadly didnt help.
The garage told me the codes they got from the van indicated a faulty fuel pump.
Having a new crank sensor fitted today, as its cheap to try before anything else.
Cheers for advice above, appreciated.

I will ask for the actual codes before I get anything else done.
Price quoted for replacement fuel pump fitted £1300 but it was suggested to do the timing chain at the same time adding a further £300
Personally this is silly money for an old van
MOT is in 8 weeks so have asked for a pre MOT check over as it might also cost a fortune to get through the MOT which would make it a simple decision about what to do.

if pretty much anything goes wrong with the fuel system youll get the codes for a feked diesel pump, even a blocked fuel filter will pull up the codes. fill the fuel filter if its empty, loosen the connection on an injector, crank it and as a general rule if the diesel is pouring out , the pumps fine
