Mk 7 handbrake problem.

Postby steelemonkey » Thu Aug 19, 2021 10:31 am

Hi, I have an 07 plate which had an mot advice for poor handbrake on one side.
It is disc. I can pull the actuator lever right over, even clamp it in place, and the handbrake does not engage.
New pads, cables, and flexible pipes have not helped. The piston is not seized.
I presume there is some sort of cam mechanism that has failed but not sure what. Any ideas?
I have also changed the pads and flexible pipes in the front and am having trouble bleeding the system. Not sure if this is associated.
TIA.

the handbrake works of the cable so the bleeding should have nothing to do with it maybe you've let air in the rear brake pipes if you did it needs bleeding from the furthest brake bleeding in order to the nearest to the brake filler reservar, have somebody to work the handbrake while you look at the brake and see if you can pinpoint the fault hope this helps

As above and you may have to use something like FORscan to operate the abs pump .

I realise the brakes need further bleeding, but don't want to waste fluid as I suspect I will need to strip the calliper to investigate this handbrake problem.
As I said, the activating lever travels its full distance without moving the piston so I think the problem is in the calliper itself.

I am sure I titled this Mk 4 handbrake problem and one persons answer is titled thus. How come it has changed to Mk7? Could the mods look at this please.

When you fitted the discs/ pads/ handbrake cable before you pressed the brake pedal and pumped the piston out for the first time to adjust the pads to the disc did yo make sure the handbrake lever on the calliper was all the way off .

Maybe not. Could this be the cause?

Mods, could this thread be put into the section for Mk 4 please, and have the title put back to Mk 4 handbrake problems. Cheers.

According to Parkers https://www.parkers.co.uk/vans-pickups/ ... d-transit/
Mk4 is 2000-2014
I stand to be corrected though, first transit I have ever owned.

I apologise, looking into this more, I see that I am getting confused by the Chinese market.
It seems that mine is a third generation, MK 7.
Thanks for putting me right Dumper.

So far I have replaced the master cylinder, all four callipers, all four flexible hoses, both rear handbrake cables and all brake pads. Still no handbrake on the nearside.
I am stumped!

It was me that moved your thread and changed the topic title, before too much confusion arose. As said, the Mk4 was from 1992-1994 and never had rear discs.

I don't read every reply in every thread, so it's best to use the report button if you need something looked at by a mod. Alternatively, you can always PM me if you need any help with posting 8) :D

The hand brake is only on the rear wheels so the master cylinder and front callipers have no effect on it the handbrake is only mechanical you don’t mention the rear discs are they badly worn check if they are within limits the only other thing I can think of is was the calliper handbrake lever all the way off on a mk2 years ago I dropped a clanger and put the cable on the wrong why round one side was shorter then the other if so it may not let the lever go all the way off.
