Hot engine starting problem.

Postby Gunjosan » Mon Sep 20, 2021 3:27 pm

I have a 2011 diesel Transit with 129,000 on the clock. It's the 2.2 engine, 115 T300S ex. police van that I've converted into a camper. About two years ago it started to develop a problem starting once the engine had warmed up e.g. a twenty-minute drive to the shops could mean difficulty in starting once I'd completed my shop. The engine turns over, but then peters out before it starts. If I leave it for an hour or so, it will start with no problem and it's started from cold (e.g. minus 7 degrees) with no problems.
In recent weeks, I've had the starter switch and inlet metering valve replaced. The garage reports that the batteries and starter motor are fine and nothing untoward is showing up on their diagnostic equipment.
I telephoned a diesel injectors specialist this morning and they said they'd never heard of injectors causing this issue.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Cheers.

Were the pump, pilot & injector learns done after the SCV was replaced..?? Was the PRV checked/replaced..?? Were they genuine Denso/Ford items..??

'Sorry Lord Knobrot, I have no idea if those items were checked or replaced or indeed if the replaced items were genuine Ford/Denso parts. The mechanic however did his apprenticeship with Ford and I'm assuming that he knew what he was looking for/doing. He's also been looking after my vehicles for the past 25 years with no complaints, and he didn't even charge me for replacing the inlet metering valve.

Poor "hot starting" can be a symptom of a poorly SCV, (Suction Control Valve), which I assume is the inlet metering valve you speak of....and/or PRV.

The inlet metering valve was the term used by the mechanic.
What is a PRV ?

My similar hot start problem has greatly improved since i renewed the copper washer seals on the injectors.

Someone else (not on this forum) also suggested reseating the injectors could be the cure. A possibility, and thanks for the input.

SCV is the term used by Ford and Denso, the manufacturer of the valve.. PRV = Pressure Relief Valve.

Cheers Knobby. I've now sold the van (the buyer was made fully aware of the starting problem hence the relatively low price) and I may start to look for a used 2019 model or I may give up vanning altogether.
