odd tddi fuel problem

Postby scas » Thu Sep 23, 2021 11:53 am

bimbling along the motorway yesterday, van jerked and spluttered and cut out. first thing i did was loosen drain on filter to see if there was diesel, as i was running on fumes. instead of diesel coming out i could hear air being sucked in. pressure gauge on top of housing was at the red. genuine filter is only about a 1000 miles old. filter was 3/4s full. got it recovered and garage diagnosed pump fuked, got it taken home.
plugged in my reader this morning and 2 pump related codes, just for the sake of it i filled filter and loosened 2 injector pipes, fuel coming out and the van started. cleared codes and they didnt return.
the gauge on top measures the difference between pressure going in and going out, as the tank was nearly empty- id guess about 10 miles left- could the fag butts and dead cows at the bottom of tank have been sucked up and blocked the filter???
or any other ideas??

The fuel pick up is perminantly a tthe bottom of the tank so you may find floating debrit has clogged the filter sock on the pick up ? try blowing back down the feed pipe from the tank to the filter ?

I had a brand new (admittedly not genuine) filter block up a bit like this after about 1000 miles, although it didn't stop, just went slower and slower and cut out if I accelerated. I also had a red indicator and air going in when I opened the water drain. Had to replace it in a layby in France and it's been fine since. So it could be the filter itself.

Although, apparently they do shut down before the fuel runs out to protect the pump, so it could just be that. Perhaps fill it up and run it. If the indicator goes red again, change the filter again.

I changed the filter housing and filter from spare parts van, threw some diesel in a can and a few tools, drove it cautiously for a few miles, then up and down the motorway at 90ish and the old buggers fine. So much fer the expert, i know mk6s like the back of my hand, mechanic with his snapon diagnostic yolk telling me my pump was 100% feked.
I wonder how many pumps, over the years were unnecessarly changed due to when timing chain breaks, all the pump codes come up, the filters empty, chafed wires, the codes come upthe codes come up, i once had a crank sensor fail and the codes come up.

Nice one, excellent result. I'm sure you're right though, there's a lot of mis-diagnoses out there.
