Glow Plug Wire? MK7 White Smoke

Upon start up the van is really groggy, I turn the key and there is ignition but cuts out of you turn the key and keep it there or rev the engine it stays running, really rough idle and white smoke from the exhaust. Looking at this forum it points to glow plugs. Just found what I think is the glow plug wire has the bolt sheered and snapped off from the rest of the glow plug wire. See picture..

So obviously there’s no power going to glow plugs? Is that the causing the smoke and bad start up? It’s a right pain to remove the rusted nut!
