non starter

Postby phatboy » Fri Oct 22, 2021 11:20 pm

Hi all
I have a 2008 2.4 that wont start a couple of weeks ago the truck started making a chuffing noise then a knocking and cut out and hasn't started since.
I had a mechanic have a look at the roadside and said it looked like injector seals so have changed them but still nothing so I checked and there if fuel and with a meter but I have now power running to the injectors I also checked the resistance and all 4 are reading 0.
any help would be greatly appreciated

You'll get no power to the injectors until the fuel pressure exceeds the minimum threshold. Live data will give the full story. Idle rail pressure is normally ~230 bar. Did the injectors go back in the same cylinders they came from..??

Have you had the codes read.?? If so what were they..??

P037D is a glow plug sense circuit issue.

All the "B" codes are BCM related and won't stop the engine from starting, mostly electrical dramas. Might pay to check all the earths and loom connectors etc..

Are you getting cam/crank synch...?? If not it will never start. It's possible you may have a cam timing issue....she may have thrown a chain, or at least a few teeth....chuffing, knocking and cutting out....doesn't sound promising. Pop the rocker cover off and check for broken rocker ladder and/or ladder bolts.

Yes, it will still turn over, but if the cam timing has jumped more than two teeth it will almost certainly break the rocker ladder or pull it's bolts out. The valves are straight on to the pistons so it's rare that they bend valves if the timing is out.

Checking the cam/crank sync will tell you straight away if it's worth looking for sensor or cam timing issues.

When cranking it should tell you whether it has sync or not. If not you may have found the issue.

Shows yes when cranking and no when just ignition on so guessing that all in sync checked the glow plugs as well 2 showing no voltage 1 is 2 volts and 2 and 11volts

Ok, so sync is good, which means the cam timing is ok...Glow plugs aren't really needed to start these engines, it helps but not really a necessity.

So your issue must be fuel related. Is you fuel filter full of fuel..?? Does she start with a sniff of easy start..??

So replaced both batteries now has nice strong crank I checked the fuel filter and that is ok I managed to get it to run for about 20 seconds with easy start but it wouldn’t idle and it’s sounded awful really loud knocking wondering if the injectors are duds

The engine is running on easy start but still not on fuel....What does the live data tell you as regards fuel rail pressure during cranking..??

The knocking noise is a bit worrying though.

Excess easy start can make the engine knock and rattle as some cylinders get fuel at the wrong time as its going through the inlet manifold and is not injected to the correct cylinder
