FORSCAN

Postby tranmx2 » Sat Oct 23, 2021 3:34 pm

I was given a XR7 XiTECH adaptor. There is no disc with it and no instructions. I have spent several hours finding info' re XR7 and looking for software.

It seems that the adaptors for OBD 2 all need software. The software is often paid for and put onto an android phone or laptop or PC.

One web page shows an adaptor - blue tooth or cable USB - a laptop. 3 components but is seems the laptop needs software. There is also software for mobile android phones.

On the FORSCAN pages there are two free downloads - one called viewer which checks compatibility of your instrument to the software.
Using the android phone I get to the info pages and to APPLE store where there is a $6 charge. It does not show which $ are used. I have not found how to download the free software.

Forscan want the number of your phone or laptop prior to making a download/install - therefore the paid for versions may only work on one instrument

Does anyone have info' re' getting the free software download ?
Is the paid for version(s) only for one instrument?

If a person used an android phone and a laptop do they need to pay for two lots of software? If a person used two laptops does payment need to be made for tow lots of software?
The software for the android does not do as much as the software for a laptop or PC.
Is there an adaptor which has the software with it?

If I need to change engine settings can this be done using an adaptor and software?

Is it neccessary to buy something more expensive to be able to adjust engine settings?

As Ford don't show wiring diagrams do they also hide that which is necessary to change engine settings?

Download Forscan from their website https://forscan.org/download.html .........Best used on a windoze laptop.

and then buy an ELM 327 adaptor from here

Thanks Chug for the info'.

Got the free Forscan basic downloaded to a laptop and used it today with XR7 adaptor and blue tooth communication. Had a look at the ELM 327 adaptor which is £17.-- but decided to try the given XR7.
Had 3 apps on the phone and 1 app on the phablet which needed to be registered so that one was not tried out.
The 3 on the phone had me confused.

I found the Forscan the easiest for me to follow. I find electronic stuff confusing. (I am 70+ yrs old) modern terminology and manner combined with a lack of clarity often makes me feel stupid.

It seems the phablet only downloads apps from playstore. I could not download the Forscan lite - paid - for android.

I have purchased 3 yrs of Forscan extended for the laptop W10 installed download - an activation code is sent to you and is shown on the web page used to purchase the 3 yrs. £15.98.

Topdon scanners/code readers from £50 to 500 odd look like the sort of thing that Rainman and Scotty Kilmer use on youtube.

You don't need to pay silly money to get Forscan working....Less than 20 quid will see you sorted using "Chug's" suggestions.

there's very little you can't do with free forscan and a ELM cable.

and when you do, you can get a free short term extended licence.

As recommended on Forscan's own website, I bought one of these: https://www.obdlink.com/products/obdlink-ex/

They'll deliver one to NZ for USD73

LOL... It's a well known name for the Tasman Sea between Aussies and Kiwis. Although it's a tad more than just a ditch I suspect...

Got the forscan software and 3 yrs license on 24 10 21.
Recieved the tunnelrats modified ELM327 USB adaptor on 01 11 21.
Today tried both in the van = need SBL Secondary Boot Loader. which needs the internet to get it.

At the house with internet and forscan on the laptop = no message to get the SBL.
In the van without internet get the message - need SBL, need internet.

Do I use the 4 ton loader to bring the van to the mansion where there is internet - the undulating boggy land en route may make this a bad idea - do I buy a generator and have a telephone installed where the van is to get the internet?
I asked about using a generator because I know that laying an electric supply cable several miles is going to be expensive.

Does anyone know how to get the SBL?

SBL will possibly be a Windoze driver thing....what version of Windoze are you using..?? If Win-10 it should find it automatically.

You don't need the internet to run Forscan whilst connected to the van. Have you applied the "extended license" to forscan..??

Hi,
ive downloaded the free forscan and have the ELM327 OBD11 adapter

thought i would take a basic look around forscan before going and buying an extended licence, just so as im happy about playing as it were

i have used peugeot planet and a snapon solus, but was many years ago

quick question tho before i go plugging in, which wont be tonight as the weather is sh1te

do you connect up with just ignition on, or do you do it with the engine running, or does it not matter
