I’m on the last job of my MOT advisories and it’s turning into a pig. Got a leak from the power steering pump to rack high pressure line at the pump end with the union bolt. However, can’t get the line off. The union bolt is just falling apart. I’ve heated with a blow torch, wire brushed, soaked it in penetrating fluid, tried to tighten then untighten, got the big hammer out, welded a spanner to it… nothing. not even a tiny bit of movement. The 18mm nut didn’t have a nylon washer at the top and 2-3 threads are visible but the leak is coming from the base of the line (square block bit) as it meets the union nut. The line also moves around freely/ spins in the nut. I’ve got a new pump so just getting a new line to fit to the new pump is an option.

But am I missing something here? Replacement lines seem hard to find. Ford parts costing £200. Ive seen a lot of similar looking lines on eBay for £50 but they’re usually RWD or Mk7 models with different end attachments. Some are sold with a separate union nut and the end looks like a hose barb fitting. How do these work? Do you put the union nut on and have to flare the end of the pipe? Was thinking to find one from a breaker but suspect they’ll all have mashed up nuts as well. Is buying some line and making my own replacement an option?

Just to add the difference in replacement lines. I've got some coming up with this fitting (which looks like what I've got currently):

Are they the same but one has a union nut on or different? Does the union nut have a circlip inside to hold it in place?

I've also read some suggestions you put the union into the pump first and then push in the pipe?

It’s been a few year since I changed the pas pump but iirc I had to put a spanner on the nut the used a long bar from the engine eye/earth/lift point and pulled it against the spanner if that makes sense, think the pipe is Flair’d after the union fitted.

Well there's no getting that nut off in the state it's in now. Seen some posts about people cutting off the nut with a dremel and replacing it onto the old pipe. That's fine if the end isn't flared but if it is I'm stuffed.

Still answering my own questions in case anyone finds it useful in future…

Those pictures of the lines are the same thing. One just has the union nut already attached which this forum advises me is wrong - you put it into the pump first then knock the line in and it stays in place with a circlip and doesn’t leak thanks to an o-ring on the inside.

I had to get drastic getting the line off the old pump in one piece. I’ve seen some people splitting the union nut with a dremel cut on two sides. I took a different approach which I think has less risk of damaging the barb on the line. First I had to get the line off the old pump with an angle grinder and cut disc:

Once that was off I used an 80grit flap disc to gradually wear down to the union nut until the line of the circlip started showing:

Eventually the tip fell off and I could prize out the circlip with a small screwdriver:

Also realised both the send and return lines have little labels with the part numbers on which will come in handy for getting a replacement:

Interesting the date on this is after my van was made so it’s been replaced. I’m betting the old one was forced out and the union nut wasn’t replaced. Anyway. Job done.
