Electric problem - turn indicators, fan, windows, clima

Postby Ric.hard » Mon Dec 06, 2021 9:36 pm

Hi guys, I have problem with electricity, most of the time some electric systems do not work, it is:
Turn indicators, heating fan, windows, manual clima, reverse gear light. Heating always heat, even though it is set on cold level.

Problems started with some strange noise in the area on drivers left hand - somewhere under steering wheel.

Sometimes it works, sometimes not. It is betting worse as the time goes by - few months ago it stopped working only for few minutes, then it was like 50:50, sometimes it was fixed when I switched the engine off and on, but now it is 90% non functional.

I checked fuses (and applied contact spray) to every contact on the flue box on the right part of a dashboard, but no effect.

Could you give me some advice where to start? What does these system have in common?

My car is Transit V184/V185, 2.0 TDCi (125), year 2006

Thanks!

Welcome to the fun Richard. It would be nice to think these are all coming from the same frayed wire somewhere but they could also be separate unrelated problems. I’d focus on diagnosing one of them and if it’s related, you’ll come across the common cause eventually. I’d start with the turn indicators and reverse light. After checking somone hasn’t accidentally used BMW bulbs, check everything from the external bulb back to the stalks/gear selector switch with the help of a continuity tester. The connections on the rear light clusters corrode and if there’s ever been a tow bar fitted the wires will have been butchered.

Rear lhs cluster was very rusted = seemingly endless problems with all the lights also rust in the connectors on both sides. Took a while but got it all working now.
The clusters are not expensive. I cleaned up mine.
As DG unit advises do one or two at a time. There's an electronic unit at the end of the wires BCM if you are OBD2. Be careful what you do with the DMM.

Thanks guys.
One more thing I would like to point to is, that there are two stays:
1) Everything works fine,
2) Non of mentioned functionality works at the same time.

I forgot to mention wipers. So it is blinkers, heating fan, clima, rear reverse lights, windows and wipers.

I still think there must be one point.

I found this topic (looks like similar problems)

Passenger had dislodged the left (green) of the two wire clusters seated on the underside of the fuse box.

No BCM on a Mk6, and it's probably not OBD2 compliant either :(

Those are all ignition dependant systems, could it be as simple as a faulty ignition switch :?:

Heating could be a slipped or broken cable on the hot/cold air supply switch, hot water always flows through the matrix; unless you have aircon, in which case it will probably be the blend door actuator :)

Ha, you are right, these are all ignition dependant systems!
Where can I locate ignition switch and how to check its condition?
Thanks guys for your support!

Ignition switch lives on the back side of the ignition barrel. Don't bother checking it's condition, they're cheap and easy to switch out.

Hi guys - after some time,
it is christmas time, so after few days in sauna, eating and drinking beer I got bored, took some tools and checked the ignition switch. And I found it's condition was not good. It was easy to get there and get it out, in my living room I checked the internal part - contacts, springs, everything was dirty and rusted. I cleaned that a bit (left there the original lubrication) and add contact spray. Assembling back was a bit tricky, but in the end I succeeded. And now it works :)
So guys, I appreciate your support, it was very valuable!

Btw. is is a camper, so I need it to go skiing

Hi guys, let me update the topic.

I did NOT succeeded with my solution :( Problems appeared again and I was not able to fix them yet. Today I replaced with the new ignition switch and problems still persists.

Any idea, what is next part to be checked? What is next part in the chain, there must be some relay or something to receive the 12V from ignition switch and do some work to switch on all the electric parts. What is it?

Thank you very much for your support, guys.

So guys, I finally find where is the problem - it is faulty relay 669T-14B192-EA in the engine fuse box - top left position. I tried to switch on and off and back and checked what the clinking relay - and it clicked twice in very short time. I replaced it, it clicks once and everything works :D

Good result and nice one for coming back to post the fix 8) Now we can all sit back and wait for it to inevitably happen to everyone else's vans.
