2.4 RWD Diff (ex RAC)

Postby Chris.Hen.81 » Sun Jan 16, 2022 3:54 pm

Hi All,

I currently have a 09 mk7 2.4 RWD transit (ex RAC).

I knew it has the 5.11 ratio which everybody knows the issues I am having ie, 2700 rpm for 60 mph.

I am looking at changing it as won't be towing caravan as much more daily driving and reading through other posts a 4.27 or 3.73 is probably the way to go with. It has been remapped.

A couple of questions and if anybody able to help that would be great.

1. I knew it needs to be a mk7 5 stud?
2. Does it have to be same engine size ie 2.4 or ok for 2.2?
3. I guess it needs to be 5 speed to match what I currently have or does it not matter if 6 speed?
4. What ratio is everybody else running?

Thanks again in advance.

Rear axle for the 2.2 and 2.4 RWD Mk7's are the same.

5 or 6 speed makes no difference. 1st gear in the 6 speed is only good for climbing trees.

If you're not towing or carrying heavy loads, the 3.73 would be ideal. You can get 3.58 and 3.31 as well.

I use a 4.27 as I often carry a decent load.

I’ve got a 3:73 axle in my ex rac mk7, I don’t carry particularly heavy loads and I rarely tow anything so it’s perfect for me.
My mk7 camper however has the 5:11 diff and it’s horrendous at motorway speeds, bad enough that I’ve got a 3:73 axle to fit on it at some point

Yeah I’m thinking 3.73

I’ll only probably be towing a caravan 2/3 times during the year and if it’s not going to struggle as don’t really like gear box tennis when going on inclines.

Thanks for the advice.

Depends on which engine you have, 100, 115 or 140.....if 140 you can go with pretty much any ratio......if 100 or 115 you may struggle using a 3.73 or lower with a load on.

I have FORD TRANSIT 330 SWB 100 with remap.

So a 4.27 would suit better? I don't want to risk struggling with caravan or car trailer on.

If anybody knows the best place to get 1 from then all information gratefully received :D

If you need to tow or carry a load....the 4.27 is a good "all-rounder" ratio, tows well and not too bad on the motorway. Can't help with where to get one as I'm in Australia.
