alternator help

Postby TheCake » Sat May 07, 2022 11:03 pm

hi all my alternator has been a bit dicky for quite some time but ive not had time to properly look into it.
the issue is it will only kick in after its been revved over 2500 and will run fine till i restart (belt and pulley move but doesnt charge), so question is, is my alternator fugged or would a new regulator fix the issue if so can i slap any make regulator on it or do i need to match say lucas to lucas for example as i have no idea what make alternator i have in there. dont think its original as it looks like there is a bolt missing. how do i find out? ideally without removing
2010 2.2 fwd single battery
thanks for any advice
is that rust spot new?

Modern day alternators have clutches on the pulley, sometimes these can fail and cause the problem that you are having, might not be your problem but worth checking...

The alternator pulley clutch is replaceable, but a special splined puller/tool is required to do it.

I don't know to be honest....never counted them.

Sometimes a new clutch assembly is nearly as much as a complete new alternator....so beware of the costs etc...

update

from a while ago but forgot to post about it

checked the alternator clutch pulley is working as it should and new belts put on but the issue still persists im living with it for now as i just revv engine on startup which gets the juice going.

earths look okay though i did replace one as when trying to release nut to check the bolt sheered off (rust) but ill have to have another dive in at some point later on to check for any other issues.

seems that the alternator issue was causing other faults like the egr valve not reaching command position and lumpy idle could have been that there wasnt enough juice to run all those parts properly.

still have issues with central locking that may be tied to whatever gremlins are plagueing my alternator as sometimes i have to go right up to the cab window to get the fob to lock and unlock the van.
