so, ive got back to this (finally) and the square plate in the pic is actually the front of the lock

it seems there may be more than one sort of lock
this one

and this one with just a square lock body on the front

i had the latter, this on ebay shows the two, one with a front fitting and one with just a square
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185237814864 ... SwwrRhz0G3so mine was just the square which is held in place with a bolt that goes through the u shaped cutouts in the top. judging by the damage someone had already tried to get to the bolt, and although i could see and feel the bolt and could get to it with a spanner i decided against trying to get it out as even if i undone it i still couldn't get to punch it out

so i used a HSCO drill bit through the center, 9mm , went through like butter. being careful with progress it just touched the bit on the back that turns (the bit the lock turns in the catch) and the bonnet popped up. stopped drilling and in with a screw driver to turn clockwise and it was released
