MK7 Horn not working (ish)

Postby Fingers McGee » Sun May 22, 2022 7:57 pm

My MK7 horn has stopped working, or at least partly. There was a mk6 horn in the van which i've replaced with an original for a MK7.
The fuse was blown which I replaced but now the horn does not work from the steering wheel, and I can't hear any relays like the horn is attempting to work.

When I lock the van via central locking, the horn does beep, so I know that it's not a fuse as it is working.
I'm thinking of the steering wheel squib being the culprit here, although oddly the cruise control functions are working from the wheel.
I removed the airbag and joined the two wires in the wheel but no joy. Before I fork out for a replacement squib, does anyone know what wires in the two sockets that connect to the squib are for the horn. I want to short them there to see if the horn does work so I can be sure it's a squib that I need.

Thanks

Thanks, though it's not easy to see there where the wires translate into on the squib.

Mk7 horn circuit
F48-5A horn signal fuse
F44-20A horn power fuse.
R18 horn relay.
(Audible miss lock feeds this relay.) So reasonable to believe fuses and relay are Ok.

Clock spring pins,
-
Wheel side - Pin 5 OG/YE (orange/yellow) : Harness side - Pin 7 BK/VT = earth/ground. (Black/Violet wire)

Wheel side - Pin 4 OG (orange) : Harness side - Pin 6. BU/WH = Power from relay coil. (Blue/white wire)

Remember wheel is negative switch to putting power to either wire won't work. grounding pin 7 of harness plug should give you a horn if rest of circuit is ok.
Be aware not to short or power any of the airbag system wiring.
Your better checking for continuity between pins on either side of clock spring.

Thanks for that. Pin 7 & 6 on the harness side are giving a toot, so it's the squib that's faulty. Checked continuity on the squib and nothing.
