Diff Oil change - Which oil?

Postby Bodhsativa » Wed May 25, 2022 5:01 pm

Hello,
I have a MK7 2012 6-speed RWD 2.2 tdci 125c Euro5 High Roof Long Base which recently was in an area that flooded and so needs the diff oil changed. The manual specificies a WSS-M2C939-A approved oil, however, I'm currently in Italy and finding it has been a nightmare. Unfortunately I don't know if it is limited-slip or not but the approved oils seem to imply it is.

The only oil I can find here with that spec is Redline 75W-90 GL-5 and its going to cost me around €100 with delivery. Can anyone advise me if others are suitable even without that spec? I've found these, for example:
(Sorry if the links are in italian, but the spec sheets are obvious)

Swag
Fanfaro
Valvoline
Mannol

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Not sure on what they are recommending nowadays but I don’t think the internals of modern axles are any different I know they do use a multi grade but I’ve always used EP90 / hypoid 90 when I had a LSD in my mk3 I still used the same oil but had a LSD additive .I got the additive from a motorsport preparation company who built rallycars if you have one where you are they may be able to help.

Okay, so it's not completely necessary to get an approved spec oil if I can find one that performs similarly?

Ford spec is WSL-M2C192-A... which is a high performance 75W140, most of oils of this viscosity will do the job nicely.

Thanks for the reply. Are you sure about that spec for my transit model? All the oils in the UK/IE/US I found matching my manual with spec of WSS-M2C939-A were 75W-90. My transit is often listed as 2011/10 - 2014. I'm not sure if it falls into the same spec as that. I am new to this part so clarification or guidance is great.

Is there a place I can find or buy access to the system with those specific details you have?

I thought I'd add this image from my manual for clarification as to why I'm in doubt about the correct oil to use. You can see the spec it gives me on the bottom row.

The info is straight out of the online Mk7 Transit manual. Lots of adds etc but useful nonetheless.

https://workshop-manuals.com/ford/trans ... is_manual/

75W90 is gearbox oil, not differential oil....lots of difference...unless you have a FWD...which I don't believe you do.

The MT-82 6 speed RWD gearbox which you have uses Ford spec WSD-M2C200-C oil...which is essentially 75W90 gear oil.

This is really helpful, thanks.
So I decided to do even more research. I used https://7zap.com to check my vin, I even found access to the current Ford Microcat (and the old 2014 one), using my VIN to check the details. As you said, the Hypoid oils all say 75W140 with spec WSL-M2C192-A. I searched their catalogues for any mention of the manual's WSS-M2C939-A spec and found nothing. The closest thing I found was that they did produce Rear Axle 75W90 oil but it doesn't have that spec, and no Ford oil historically has that spec either. There is an updated 942 spec for limited slip diffs from 2014 on though. I have no idea why the manual recommends it, I can only assume they included it with the intention to put it into production but never did.

In any case the WSL-M2C192-A spec gives me way more available options. Thanks for helping me sort this out.
