Reversing light.

Postby m25roundabout » Thu Jun 09, 2022 10:56 am

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help? Have looked through forum first. My reversing lights have never worked. Switch on gearbox works. Fuse fine. Bulbs good. I see on the rear light cluster there are 6 wires for 4 lights. I am trying to work out where the fault is. Any ideas please? Ford Transit 2010. Lwb high top. Many thanks.

could be a broken wire along the line if you have a multimeter check the cluster for difference in voltage when reverse is engaged.
if racking has been put in or perhaps anything screwed to the sides that may be the cause
is that rust spot new?

Thanks TheCake, will do. Not being a sparkie I can't understand why there are only 6 wires going into the back light cluster when there are four lights to light. In my limited knowledge I would have imagined there would be two wires for each light, hence a total of 8. But it all looks correct as there are no other connectors there. Thanks again. Will do what you say.

How do you know the switch on the gearbox works?

Hi Ned, I undid the switch from the gear box and tested it. It worked.

Hi Everybody, many thanks for your help so far. The reversing switch works. I took it off and tested it. If I put the van into reverse gear and put a multi meter across the switch connector I get a voltage reading. If I take off the rear light clusters and put a voltage across the reversing light bulbs, they come on. So as I see it there are two places I may have a fault. 1) When selecting reverse gear the ball bearing in the reverse switch is not pushed far enough in to make a connection, or 2) There is a fault between the reverse switch connector and the rear light cluster. I hope this makes sense to you. Your thoughts please. Many thanks.

Hi, I am hoping I might be close to sorting my reversing lights problem. I just had another look at the gearbox switch area and see that there is a wire coming off it with a spade connector. It looks like it could be an earth. My question is, if it is, where does it attach too? I am looking and will continue to look. If anyone can direct me that would be great. Many thanks.

Nope, I think that was the oil light earth I was looking at. Still not sure where that connector goes but heyho. The quest continues.

Hi, apologies for my ignorance but still trying to sort reversing lights. Looking on the wiring diagram I have checked that the fuse for the switch is working in the engine fuse box. But on the wiring diagram is seems to mention another fuse/relay for the reversing lights in the passenger fuse box. Does this makes sense? Would appreciate feedback. (If I haven't sorted the problem soon and I get some money...I will bring in an expert!).

Ned, apologies, and thanks for the prompt! I thought I knew how to test the switch. Obviously I didn't! I bought a new one just to try it. Just fitted it. Two beautiful bright white lights now eminating from the rear of the van when in reverse. Cheers!

No apology needed, I had similar problem with a mongayo, the ball had worn just enough that it didn’t contact correctly when fitted but worked when pressed by hand, glad your sorted now.
