Is it ok to drive in Limp Mode / failed Turbo?

Postby beanis » Wed Aug 10, 2022 2:10 pm

Hi There,

My mk7 2013 FWD euro 5 transit seems to have a completely failed turbo. Absolutely no turbo power and the error code is repeatedly P0299 low power boost. Actuator arm is moving as normal, and I've tried a different electronic actuator with no change in power.

van has removed & deleted DPF and EGR, so these aren't the issue. It's been fine last 18months since I replaced last actuator which was faulty and occasionally sticking / and then stripping the plastic gears inside. I suspect this is now a knackered turbo which has finally 'stuck'? Only odd thing is the vanes seem free once I disconnect the actuator. So not really sure what is happening.

I have an urgent 350mile trip to make on Friday, and my trusted mechanic is back up north at the end of the journey.

Would it be ok for the engine to drive it without turbo power, carefully, up the motorway for so long? Will this cause any great stress on the engine?

Cheers in advance for any advice

Won't cause any undue stress to the engine but it will be painfully slow if it's in true limp mode...you'll be lucky to get out of 2nd/3rd gear.

Have you had a physical look at the turbo impeller to make sure it's not knackered.??

Hi knobby- thanks for letting me know it won't totally fkuc the van to drive it, that's good.

It is slow, but on motorway might limp home. Amazing how much work the turbo does, you only realise once it dies.

I've actually just left it at a local garage in the hope they can see an obvious issue. I'll see what they say and if they are competent.

Fingers crossed its obvious and I wont be limping home!

Have you checked the intercooler and pipe work for leaks.

update: the garage said the van had 'cleared itself' and that they had revved it and 'loads of sh*t came out the exhaust' and then it worked.
Seems back to normal now.
VERY WEIRD!

Horrible Euro-5's....it will probably happen again. They're possessed.
