Mk7 2011 cold start issues

Postby Transitlass » Thu Aug 11, 2022 6:05 pm

Upon cold start I can drive immediately for up to 3 miles or so. Engine then coughs, splutters and dies. Removal of fuel filter and filling with diesel allows me to restart engine. However if engine has not warmed up will repeat the same process. Once engine has warmed up will drive all day no issues.

History

May 2022. Had reconditioned engine fitted, new turbo, 4 new injectors and a clutch.
No issues for 2 weeks.

June 2022. Started cutting out on cold starts. Fuel filter housing, filter and pipe to fuel pump replaced.
Was still cutting out afterwards. Replaced fuel line from tank to filter.
After this replaced original fuel pump witha 2nd hand fuel pump fitted and metal leak off pipes replaced.

Since then have had the non return valve and associated pipe replaced but issue still continues.

Any ideas?? Mechanics are stumped.

Euro-4 or Euro-5..?? FWD or RWD..?? Which engine, 2.2 or 2.4.?? 2011 was the changeover year between Euro-4 and Euro-5.

"Non return valve"..??

Euro-4 or Euro-5..?? They have quite different fuel systems.

Upon cold start I can drive immediately for up to 3 miles or so. Engine then coughs, splutters and dies --- vibration expansion.
Removal of fuel filter and filling with diesel allows me to restart engine. ---- time to cool down no vibration and ready for another start.
Once engine has warmed up will drive all day no issues. --- got past the reluctance point.

Upon cold start I can drive immediately for up to 3 miles or so ---- engine temp 20 to 40 C - expansion - electrical/electronic thing near to the heat. Wires touching/solder joint cracked/connector/connection moved.
Vibration - mechanical device, electrical/electronic - solder joint - wires touching - connector/connection moved.

Engine then coughs, splutters and dies ---- mechanical, electrical/electronic or fuel?

As you have had your play with the fuel system it could now be time to play with the electricity.

Observe, tweak wires/connectors/connections. Disconnect WD 40 reconnect connectors.

Engines are well founded in the past 100 yrs or so in having humans interest in them to be faults and now there are electronicty thingies for them to find interesting.

Could use Forscan to help find the fault - when it dies.
Forscan can be connected prior to start and be working when the engine is operating = lots of numbers and text to look at.
If you see mostly the number 42 you have ended up on a planet where the answer is 42.
As an interest and to stop you from wandering about whilst amongst 42 you could ponder on what the question is.
2012 MK 7 E 5 100-350 3.5 XLWB RWD Duratorq 2.2L CR TC 14 DSL 100/125 PS E5 DPF BCM PCM RCM
Was DRRB 74 KW 100 HP 100 cv. Now CYR5 125 HP. PCM could still be for 100 HP.
