2.2 Fault code P042F, motorway breakdown, Breather Mod?

Postby Flowboy » Sun Aug 14, 2022 12:43 pm

Hi all,
any & all advice gratefully received!

Transit Van (NOT Connect!) MWB Euro5 (I think!) 2013 2.2 125ps FWD. 108K on clock.
Has been v reliable for past 3 years of ownership, as have previous 3 Trannies.
Does a lot of local town work (yeah don't tell me, DPF...) but also 6-10 long M way trips through year. Have tried to ensure regen.

Last week the van conked on the motorway, started losing power, limping, then stalled on hard shoulder. Drained a little fuel from filter, there was a small blob of muck in it, started van again. It ran for another half mile & failed again. Breakdown truck home 4 hours later...
Funnily enough, back home it started 1st time & drove off back of tow truck. Seems to tick over ok at about 900rpm but nervous it will happen next time I'm out in it.

I have a basic Aldi OBD2 meter, the only fault came up was P042F.
P0042 in OBD booklet list says, "bank 1 Sensor 3 Heater circuit".
Could this be EGR or some other issue? Fortunately EGR easy to get at on FWDs

Driving conditions were very hot, 30 plus degrees, 30 mins queueing in solid M way hold up crawl, followed by 70mph mostly uphill haul for several miles. Didn't notice if eng temp was bad. Van was running fine until going duff.
As an aside.. Week previously I ran a can of Ecomotive engine/exhaust cleaner in 1/4+ tank of fuel. Then... got stuck on M way & ran down to 0 on fuel gauge, literally as I got to fuel station. I hate that this happened & suspicious that it "might" be part of the problem? Although the van ran ok for week after, in town.

Also, a breather mod has been referenced in quite a few posts as possibly helpful to EGR / Turbo (?) but I have not found the actual details on any post, i.e. from where to where, some specs etc. I guess its a big breather required.

Just to add to previous post;
when the van started to misbehave, the dash engine block lamp came on but now goes off when I start it.

Also the ESP & ABS lights came on recently & have stayed on even though the brakes work fine. The garage said they'd cleared the lamps but they came back on soon after.
Possibly the ESP lamp is somehow related to the EGR, going by other comments on other posts.
I also read in some posts that the EGR code refers to it being closed & as such the engine should work ok with it in that state. My experience might suggest otherwise!??

Thanks
As the van was in for MOT when they cleared the lamp, I assume they had a good look at the rings etc. I had already checked before that & couldn't see anything obvious but I'll bear it in mind, as they said to bring it back to them. Fractures are sometimes hard to spot.

Of course the van ran fine today (in a short local trip), ticks over as well as ever. Just a bit concerned about the next motorway blast!

One of mine you could spin it without any real force but on both the light would come straight back on as soon as you got upto speed.
