All Terrain Tyres

Postby Tim321 » Thu Sep 22, 2022 2:22 pm

Hello, I have a mk7 fwd Transit with the original 15 inch steel wheels. Is anyone running BFG KO2 tyres or similar all terrain tyres? If so, is there a size that fits without any modifications to the wheelarch etc. Current tyres are 195/70/15 but I’d like to go bigger for more ground clearance. Thanks.

I’ve ran 225 70 15’s without any issues but that wasn’t on standard wheels, I did have trouble with 235 75 15 rubbing the front arches on bumps but as said I was running 8” wheels with a 4” back space so standard wheels maybe different, it’ll be down to what fits on the standard wheel and what you can get in 15”.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. My rims are marked 5.5j so I guess that’s the width - does anyone know the max width tyre I can fit on them? I’ve seen mk7s with 225/70/15 tyres but I’m not sure if all the 15” wheels were the same width from the factory? I just wondered if anyone has fitted 235/75/15 as this is the only BFG tyre available with a high enough load rating (101 minimum)? Also this size for Maxxis and a few others. Not found any smaller ones yet.

Is this any good for you,

https://tiresize.com/calculator/

You might be better off buying some 16” wheels as this opens up much more choice in A/T tyres, I’ve found it’s difficult to get good A/T tyres in 15” with the load rating and size you want.

Thanks for the link - it was very helpful. For anyone interested, I have managed to find Maxxis Wormdrive (106q) and General Grabber AT3 (106s), both in size 205/70/15. I think the Transit requires speed rating of R or above so I will probably go for the AT3s.

I run 235 wide tyres on my 5.5 -16 rims. But that is pretty well the limit. I can feel the tyres overhanging the rims edges enough to make steering a little vague at low speeds.
I'm about to have 7" Ford Ranger Rims welded to my Transit 16" wheel centres. They happen to fit perfectly. But this requires the offset to be maintained to prevent the tyres rubbing on the steering linkage on full lock.
Cheers,
Joe
