Starter issues mk7

Postby ukbrad » Tue Nov 22, 2022 2:16 pm

Hello,

I have had a Mk7 for last couple of years and have always had starting issues with it. I change the starter motor and hasn't cured the problem. It has gotten worst, I have just replaced starter cable but still getting the click with no starting... It does eventually start with a jump start.

Is it likely to be an earth problem, is there a way to test with meter? Also are there any started relays I could replace to rule out? Thanks

It's a rapid click as apposed to a single click if this helps at all. Thanks

rapid clicking is usually low voltage but if you've changed the live cable and the starter i'd be checking the earth, a jump lead from the engine to the chassis will do for a test :?

could be alternator not working right and letting battery drain
how do you drive the van? on a scale of driving miss daisy to white van man
do you have a dashcam fitted?
how often do you drive?
do you have a voltmeter/multimeter to check voltage when off/idle and revved over 2500.
as bortaf suggested its always worth checking your earths as transits love to rust
is that rust spot new?

If al connections are good and new starter, Have you tried a new ignition switch, it's a common problem on mk7 and cheap to replace even with genuine switch at around £25 but much cheaper generic ones are available on ebay that work OK,
There's also a relay that goes faulty in interior fuse box if switch doesn't help
