Vibration in all gears

Postby GTransit » Mon Feb 06, 2023 12:37 pm

Hi again guys. Not having much luck with vans at the moment!

2011 Transit 2.2 FWD

Vibration / hum in all gears , at its loudest 2-3000 rpm

1st gear a little stiff to engage in comparison to other vans

Put the clutch down and the noise goes away. Maybe answering my own question here , but if the noise is going away with the clutch down can I be pretty certain it’s a clutch issue ?

Look at the easy to get at stuff first ..driveshafts and cvs ..get under there start twisting, turning, tugging and levering, you are looking for slop, and metallic noises.
find nothing ...then you can look at the clutch , if DMF, it's that breaking up.

drive shafts being under power will make different noises than when not being powered

Thanks - if it were driveshafts / cvs would the noise not continue regardless of the clutch being in or out ?

If you have a vibration/noise and the noise goes away when the clutch is down....your DMF might be failing, if fitted. How many miles on the beast..??

Hmmm...might be gearbox related, noisy when clutch is out, goes away when clutch in, 1st motion shaft bearing maybe.??

if mtx75 there is a bearing that fails first ....the reason is; its a sealed bearing and ford put it in there and no one knows why. bearing does not share gearbox oil like the others ..and revolves around in its own detritus.
Not sure, some have a plate over this bearing and it can maybe be accessed from the outside of the box.

Hi guys

Removed the gearbox this evening.

Clutch fine , pressure plate fine , slave fine

DMF however has play side to side , and play up and down if that makes sense , as in pushing on it it rocks. In fact , the dmf has rotated to the point the bolts fixing it are not accessible unless i twist the front with a bar. Nice pile of dark grey dust landed on the floor directly under it too, on removal of the gearbox.

Are the symptoms described likely to be DMF ? I’m hoping so as I’d hate to replace it to then find out it was gearbox all along, though it looks very much like I’ll need to replace the gearbox regardless

Thanks

Well you've got the gearbox out ..

You can now do some checks

Alan Howatt shows how:
Here you see at the beginning about 3 mins into the video he is turning the input shaft and you can hear the roughness.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K79jMOPbuw&t=885s

note ..you'll be able to hear it better if on a table top ..as this amplifies the noise, drain the oil before the test.

it looks so easy to do the rebuild ..its worth doing, if you are capable and have the tools, if the vans covered high mileage like anything over 150,000..i would be doing it.

Just to update guys :

Replaced the drivers side drive shaft due to noise when rotating the bearing. Weird as the noise would only happen if the bearing was rocked in a certain way.

Maybe I didn’t ever need to remove the box , but the DMF was humped anyway.

Hope this may help someone. Thanks for the help and advice.

It's been your dmf, how could your driveshaft bearing effect it if noise changes pressing the clutch....
Some people just over think the problem , hope you replaced the clutch

I could only think the bearing was rumbling more when under load from the engine
