2.2Tdci MK7 FWD Dpf regens every 30-50 miles !

Postby heitam » Sat May 27, 2023 5:37 pm

My MK7 2.2Tdci fwd 92 kW dpf regens every 30-50 miles ! What forces it to do that often ? No fault codes. Started to act like this suddenly. Anybody had that situation ?

What fault codes are you getting..?? Does the regen complete successfully each time..??

If it's trying to regen every 30-50 miles, something obviously isn't right. What code reader are you using..?? Are you using Forscan or IDS..?? Some readers don't cope with the Transit protocols well.

Unfortunately do not know what soft the garage I went are using. Shows differential pressure, etc., seems OK. But to answer your question Iˇm incapable at the moment. Will figure it out.

If there are no fault codes and its doing it that often then its not getting a chance to complete or it does but you’ve spent most of the time idling.

I’ve had a dpf issue and it was a faulty vapouriser which needed to be replaced. I’ve got forscan on my phone and jse a bluetooth obd reader to monitor it when I hear the exhaust note change.

Sometimes if its trying to regen and i spend time in traffic then it says the “soot load” is 0% but as soon as it completes and i drive another few miles then it rapidly increases and sits about 40% soot load. So it hasn’t regen’d properly. Only happens when sat in traffic otherwise it regens fine. I even specifically take it for an A-road drive at 50+mph so it completes properly.

Hey guys again. Just unbelievable how my situation got solved. Worth to share you guys, cause I believe not so many similar situations. Here we go. Reading this forum two weeks already, I read one string where somebody described that when aux.battery is getting low, then wierd things can happen (obviously you understand that Iˇve got twin battery setup). My Van is manufactured 2013, i.e last editions of MK7 FWD 92 kW. And still ran on original batteries from factory. Yes, I recharged them quite often already, especially winter time (live in Estonia, we still have close to minus at nights at the moment however its a bit unusual this time of the year) as Ebersch.heater eates them with pleasantly. But once again no any signs that anything wrong and no fault codes whatsoever. So, decided to recharge batteries again, however no particular need for that. And "voila" after beeing recharged everyday dpf regens stopped immediately. So, end of the story. Just bought new batteries yesterday and thats it. Someone wrote here in the forum, that he bought much more powerful batteries than manufacturer supplied (ford originals were 60Ah, 590 A) and cranking was much better after replace, but I would not tell much of the difference. Bought Vartaˇs 85Ah, 850A. Anyway, Iˇm very thankful that you guys in UK have such a hugh community of consumers and launched that wonderful site. Here we have population of 1,3 mil., so of course here cannot be volume enough. So, I consider myself lucky to finalize the issue with 252EUR investment in new batteries as my garage told me that ok, lets start investigate the case with changing the injectors and finish with new turbo...
And actually I understand them, cause they spend a lot of time and sometimes it is obviously much more profitably just change brakepads/discs etc. Forgot to mention that my vans milege is 185000 km. And thank you guys once again, love your work here.

:)Yes avoid going down the route of indiscriminately replacing things if you can, I've seen the results first hand replacing things one after another and not getting anywhere which ended up replacing the entire engine and still not hadn't got anywhere further forward!

I have a theory why just replacing batteries worked for you. (DPF regeneration works better when there's a heavy electrical loads switched on, such as headlights, cabin heater air blower, it's because the engine works harder to make the electrical power and so makes more fire to soak the DPF with) My theory is when you had the tired old batteries installed that you were avoiding having these extra electrical loads switched on, in case it caused problems with battery going flat. After the new batteries installed you were more confident and had the cabin heater air blower and headlights on?

Iˇm speechless as often regens back again. 2 days after batteries (twin setup) change ok and now again everyday regens. Was so happy that battery change seemed to solve the problem, but short success.
I do not understand what forces dpf to regen so often. Anyone have ideas ?

I was 'struggling to understand' how just replacing the batterys resolved the issue. The only working theory I could think of was: that the alternator worked harder for the first days, while the batteries were "settling in", and that soaked the DPF in more fire.

? Concerning the frequent regenerations: 1. Do you know if the DPF catches a lot of soot rapidly and that triggers more frequent regens?
2. Do you know if, when after the regeneration cycle has ended, of how much of the captured soot is actually eliminated from the DPF?

It could be not enough soot is eliminated.
Or it could be that the engine is just making more soot!

Reading on here (as my van doesn't have a DPF) frequent regens seem to be caused by the regeneration not completing properly, and trying again.
More often than not, this is because there's a problem with the vaporiser, as mentioned by GT addict in a post above. Maybe that's a good place to start looking :?:

Yes, absolutely. And also if the 5th glowplug isn't setting light to the fuel spray, then with the not properly burned fuel have a hard time re-genning, or might not even regen at all. Salt corroded wires underneath are very common problem

As dpf is not blocked and no any faults shown so far however driven couple of thousand km, then in my opinion dgr cycles are completed every time when regen happens.
So there must be something what forces dpf to regen again and again.
Talk to the specialist and they suggested not to touch at the moment and wait while some fault code appears or goes limp mode etc.
It would be stupid start changing turbo, fuel injectors, etc. all expensive stuff. So go figure, whats the right thing to do...
Just afraid if frequent regens eventually burn the dpf cells prematurely or something else ruins...

Most people would just get rid of the DPF, have it gutted and mapped out....issue sorted.
