Transit 2.2 with fuel issue. Sluggish and bad performance.

Postby ReeceyESP » Sat Feb 24, 2024 2:14 pm

Hello all,

I have a 2008/09 transit 2.2 FWD 140hp LWD. The issue it has is I have to accelerate the nuts off it to get any power from it. When it's not loaded is drives fine or better to say that it's less noticeable. But when I'm carrying a heavy load, you can really tell the lack of performance it has especially going up hills and I alway have to lower by at least 2 gears to be able to maintain the speed/revs or to just simply get any power from it. Fuel consumption is pretty bad. This is a fuel related issue I believe as when I start the van from a cold start, it turns over but doesn't actually start the engine then ill try again and it will start but the revs will slowly lower, the engine judders, then clonks out. I find that I have to press the accelerator pedal and start it at the same time and it usually starts after the 3rd attempt and then that won't happen again until I start it from cold again. It only happens on cold starts. Would anyone know what the issue could be? I did change the fuel filter 2 years ago as i couldn't get the engine to start and that solved that problem. I really want to get to the bottom of this as I have a 3000km journey to do soon. Just to note, I have forscan and no codes come up!!!

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

Check inlet/exhaust for restrictions.
Turbo arm /vanes for resistance of movement. Turbo acutator connections. You may not have the vane type turbo.
EGR for closing.
MAP for gundge.
Glow plugs.
Yours may have a SCV.
Forscan can show DTCs. Live data can show the readings from many sensors.

Ive been having a closer look at the issue, i took the airbox off today, cleaned the MAF sensor (was a bit dirty but nothing too drastic, havent been able to test it since cleaning though), ive cleaned the inlet manifold sensor, again nothing too drastic just a bit of carbon build up. I still believe this is a fuel issue and ive noticed when taking the airbox off that the engine cover is dampish. It looks to me like diesel. Its not wet and there are no obvious leaks. I pulled the fuel pressure regulator out today and it looks in great condiction! Doesnt look like that would be causing any issues. I did notice a little pool of diesel where the injector sits on the 4th cylinder.

Anyway, i have took some photos for the experts to look at in hope of someone coming up with something regarding this. The only code ForScan is throwing is P068A (ECM/PCM power relay de-energized - too early) I have noticed that the van does have a battery drain on it and this is the reason why i havent been able to test it today after cleaning the MAF sensor because ive had to put it on a deep cycle charge overnight. I do usually have to take the negative off the battery from under the seat when parking the van up.

Anyway, the photos....:

He hasn't been back on here since...so we'll probably never know.

Far too many people come on here and ask for help etc....and never come back to see if there is an answer.
