Mk7 2.2 - Acceleration issues after reconditioned engine

Postby TheChits » Tue Mar 04, 2025 11:10 am

Apologies if there's already a thread on this topic - would very much appreciate some pointers in the right direction please.

Transit MK7 260 LR
Reconditioned engine fitted last week after conrod failure! All ancillaries remained original - mechanic checked all and only replaced injector seals and one glow plug
No fault codes/dash lights prior to engine failure...
Mechanic said all felt great on test drive, but I've since noticed sluggish acceleration response.
Not sure what to tackle first as I know it can be a bit of a needle in a haystack to find the cause.
Added to that, this morning it started up but cut out after 4/5 seconds. Multiple times. Thought that could be a separate immobiliser issue so locked/unlocked a few times and it started, idled and ran fine. Still no warning lights on dash.

Here's my hitlist. I'd be so grateful if someone could put these in order of priority for most likely culprit/potential cure, and also if any are most likely not worth worrying about:
- MAP - check and clean ✅
- MAF - check and clean ✅
- Fuel System & DPF 'snake oil' additive
- Fuel filter
- PCM firmware update / relarns needed?
- Suction control valve (SCV)
- Pressure relief valve (PRV)
- Throttle body
- EGR valve
- DPF Cleaning
- Blocked Vaporiser
- Anything else?

Finally, I've been thinking about getting a cheap fault code reader. Any value in that? If so, any recommendations?
I'm in West Cornwall - if there are any members nearby who might be able to lend a hand, there's beers and pastys in it for you at the very least!

Many many thanks all.

I would check for boost leaks first if it were mine,
Changing fuel filter can only help.
Don’t get generic code reader. Invest in forscan and a cable.
Any dpf blockage would come up as a code.

PCM firmware update / relarns needed?
- Suction control valve (SCV)
- Pressure relief valve (PRV)

A 2.2 post 26 Sept 2011 wont' need the first nor have the the last two.

I wonder if timing could be off a tooth..

Is the cutting out when starting when cold ?

You could add cramshaft sensor that could make it stall.

Need to know the year of the van and what engine was fitted? Euro4 or euro5?

OP read some codes go from there.

Its all debatable until then.

Update:
The stalling thing must have been immobiliser related as I've had zero issues since.

Acceleration/power issues remain however.
I'm awaiting the specific details of the engine, but the van is a mk7 2013 swb, fwd. No ancillaries were replaced so for now I'm assuming it was a like-for-like Euro 5

Thank You:
@ballihoo for suggesting checking the boost pipes. Added to the list
@DanMK7uk I've queried this with the garage. A brand new timing kit was installed, so doubtful?

Was the problem there before timing kit was fitted ?

Get forscan and a compatible cable and see if theres anything in the fault codes. Even old stored ones may help.

You say no ancillaries were changed, i.e. old ones were used. I assume that includes the turbo aswell?

Had the van back into the garage that fitted the reconditioned engine today.
No change in performance - the sluggish/lazy acceleration and seemingly low power continues...

They did a full diagnostic check - no issues found at all.
Smoke test revealed no compromises in the boost pipes etc.
Fuel filter changed (why not!)

I did also receive a "bbfly-BF32302" OBD cable in the post this afternoon and have forscan installed ready to use... Any suggestions for what I could try that might help the issue?

Remaining on the list are:
- MAP - check and clean ✅
- MAF - check and clean ✅
- Fuel System & DPF 'snake oil' additive ✅
- Fuel filter ✅
- Suction control valve (SCV)
- Pressure relief valve (PRV)
- Throttle body check?
- Turbo? (although garage said it was fine - no play or anything)
- EGR valve (only 2yrs old - how long to they last!?)
- DPF Cleaning

But wouldn't issues with any of those show up on a diagnostic report?

What about the PCM firmware update / "re-learns"? - can i do that myself via forscan?

Apologies for the amateurish questions... Thanks in advance for any responses!

Yes you can do the learns, via service functions

Clear prv counts, Fuel pump learn and injector pilot learn

Was timing checked?

Cheers

Euro-5 doesn't have an SCV, PRV or learns like the Euro-4's. They have "adaptions" which can be reset and are done as you drive.
