Handbrake cable routing

Can anyone tell me how the O/S handbrake cable should be routed? Cos I've just been looking over my newly acquired van and at the moment it's rubbing a hole through the damper sleeve... pretty sure that's not right Google search has failed me, so I've got nothing to reference against.

Or is it just that I've got a crappy aftermarket cable that's not quite long enough or something?

my connect has a sort of thick wire "stand off" thing

Looks like the whole thing just needs persuading frontwards an inch or so. I might just get a new cable anyway, the sheath is already partly worn through from the rubbing!
