Mk6 wont start after fuel pump replacement

Postby jmprince80 » Sat Apr 26, 2025 7:16 pm

Hi, some time ago I replaced the pump in my mk6, coded it in with forscan. There are no DTCs so its not an immo issue.

Before old pump died completely, it would intermittently start, when it felt like it, and run for a few days then back to P1664 etc.

I thought, possibly the timing chain had slipped, but today I finally got around to taking the timing cover off. Timing seems to be OK.

Doesn't even sound like its trying to fire at all. Bloody thing is driving me mad now. I'm at the point where I'm feeling like throwing the towel in with this engine and either swap it, or put the box on a hopefully more reliable mk7 chassis.

Diesel is being delivered to the injectors, no leaks in fuel system as far as I can tell. I haven't taken the rocker cover off to inspect under there, but presumably if timing is good, I shouldn't need to?

Anyone have any ideas? I'll post pics of how timing sprockets look with flywheel locked if anyone wants to take a look for me?

If its not timing and not the pump because its a new pump, what else would stop it starting?

Here's how I have the timing set up. Anything obvious that I'm missing?

Its on the crossmember, and its there because the flywheel is pinned.

Does anyone know what I should be looking at in terms of sensor outputs on Forscan for potential diagnosis?

Do the crank sensors go bad? I know they can get fouled up by metallic debris, but presumably if they're clean then it should run, as its just a hall effect sensor right?

ordered a replacement as only £12, if i dont make much progress with it this week then probs gonna end up dropping £1000 on engine swap job, problem is when i got the van there was very little service history, the pump died within a month, so better to just put a known good lump in it maybe. Clutch needs replacing too anyway.

So from the colour of this "oil" it looks like my van doesn't want to start because of a blown head gasket?

Come to think about it, on long drives at high RPM it did sound like it was blowing :(
