Turbo not kicking in

Postby Nick_B » Fri May 02, 2025 9:46 am

I’m having an issue with the Turbo not kicking in following a visit to the garage.

I had a new rocker cover and seals installed along with a new oil sump.

Before the work was done the turbo would really kick in around 2500 revs, but
Driving home from the garage I noticed there was hardly any power at all.

I was sat at traffic lights on a slight incline and in 1st gear I had to floor it and go over 4000 revs just to get moving.

When I got home I checked all the connectors etc. made sure the connector for the turbo was secure. I even sprayed injector cleaner into the large turbo inlet pipe.

But again, driving it there is absolutely no power at all.

I was thinking it may be due to the injectors being put back in the wrong order but there are no issues with it idling.

Has any got any suggestions or ideas why the turbo isn’t kicking in?

There is an actuator linkage on the turbo that opens the waist gate, if the waste gate is stuck open then you get no turbo assistance.

Depending on what model of transit you have .. could be electronic actuator or manual one

The manual one can stick, it's a vacuum operated and you need to buy the actuator, if at fault, it will be split diaphragm ..you can test it by sucking on the pipe to it ..or test it to see if linkage and pivot points are moving freely.
maybe a simple fault like split or disconnected rubber vacuum hose.

The electronic one is a different thing all together ..does still have a linkage and pivot points, but this is moved by a tiny motor and gearbox.

You need diagnostic test equipment to do anything further .

You'll have to see with forscan or scanner if its moving ..will be in percentages ..you can do a test on it in the forscan diagnostic program.

Other things.

Boost pipes ...leaking at joints or holed
Something..a sensor etc disconnected. LOOK FOR THIS FIRST .
EGR gummed up and stuck open

Forscan - that's what they recommend here .

NOTE: you can use forscan to get correct fault codes with proper explanation of them - a generic fault code reader may be somewhat misleading

"Forscan" is FREE software that you download to a laptop..you buy the interface cable -- this is just the cable you need a laptop)
You can join the forscan forum ..again free, to get the software and more answers.

You've not told us what model Transit you have..?? Assuming Mk7 as per your avatar..??

2.2 or 2.4..?? Euro-4 or Euro-5..?? What PS engine..??

Does it have a wastegate type turbo or VNT..?? You mention "connector for turbo" so can we assume you have a VNT..??

What fault codes are you getting..??

Hello,

First of all thank you so much for responding to my post. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond in such detail.

This is the turbo that I have. The engine is a 2.2 TDCI.

A friend of mine said he had a similar problem and it turned out to be the MAP sensor. I’ve ordered one and it arrives on Tuesday.

This is a video of the turbo

So she looks like a Euro-5 and a VNT turbo, vehicle build date after Sept 26 2011.

The turbo in the video looks new.

Curious to see if the MAP sensor sorts it as they rarely fail.

Ok so changing the map sensor didn’t work.

The turbo is new too. I’ve just taken off the inlet pipe and there seems to be a bit of oil inside it now sure if that would cause an issue

I’ve cleaned out the turbo inlet and sprayed turbo cleaner though the turbo. Still nothing!!

It’s annoying because the turbo was working before I took it to the garage. I took it back and they had a Quick Look and said they can’t see what’s wrong and that I might need to take it to a diesel specialist.

I took it to the garage to have a new rocker cover, new oil sump and the drive wheel for the belt fixing.

They did all the work and charged me £800. But now the turbo has stopped kicking in.

The map sensor is giving readings when the engine is rev’d but nothing from the turbo.

When I’m going from a standing start on a slight incline it hardly moves, I have to floor it and put it into the red to get it slowly moving.
Even on the motorway when there is a very slight incline I have to drop gears. I was doing 60 and had to go to 3rd gear to keep the speed up.

well there are different rocker covers people can make mistakes with, its happened here before.

if so, you may have boost air going where it shouldn't be ..or sensors not reading correctly and sending wrong info to the pcm
Euro-5 started Sept 26th 2011 - are different, they can be distinguished by having orange rubber one way valves in the underside of rocker cover.

I’m now thinking about taking off the EGR valve to see if it’s clogged up. They’re not that expensive to replace so depending on what condition it’s in I might just buy a new one

When you say you are getting readings from the MAP sensor. What readings are you getting? Have you got forscan running while driving or just a static rev?

Shouldn't you be taking it back to garage that done your work??, or was this fault there already??

No the turbo used to kick in before I took it to the garage.

I took it back and they said they’d not driven it before doing the work so it’s basically my word against theirs.

When I took it back he connected it to the diagnostic computer and said there are no faults at all.

The rocker cover looks ok too, there’s no leaks or anything.

No leaks but if it hasn’t got the valves and subsequent vents it’ll cause problems.
