Drives ok but sometimes cuts out on tickover. When in neutral won't rev past 3000. Help please!

Think the revs are capped in neutral

so now you only have one problem - but lots to look at .

fuel system, fuel filter.
describe how the engine sounds
how it starts

And with all modern vehicles you need to plug it into as scanner to read the fault codes..or you are going no where .

Forscan - that's what they recommend here .

NOTE: you can use forscan to get correct fault codes with proper explanation of them - a generic fault code reader may be somewhat misleading

"Forscan" is FREE software that you download to a laptop..you buy the interface cable -- this is just the cable you need a laptop)
You can join the forscan forum ..again free, to get the software and more answers.

Thanks Mark. It will rev to redline if you turn off then restart(sometimes) . Going away weekend and can't get it scanned till Tuesday so thought I'd ask anyway.
Thanks for replying tho.

They don't rev past 3000rpm in neutral on purpose, it's programmed into the PCM,....free revving a diesel engine when not loaded is not good for them, throwing rods is a possibility when abused. If it does free rev to redline in neutral, one of the clutch switches may be faulty. "NEVER" rev them to redline, especially if not under load...!! They make all their torque by 2200-2300rpm and max hp at 3500rpm, there is no need to rev the crap out of them.

Cutting out at idle or when coming to a stop at a junction or traffic lights is usually caused by the SCV playing up.

When were the learns last done..??

What fault codes are you getting..??
