Turbo Inlet Hose Oily. Mk7 2.2 FWD Euro5

Postby gt_addict » Tue May 06, 2025 6:09 pm

Evening all,

Bit of a strange one. I have had a slight oil drip on the drive for a few months now. I always assumed it was coming from the driveshaft oil seal (Nearside). Just looked under the bonnet and seen oily residue around the big turbo inlet hose. Wiped it off and its like clean oil. Looks like thats the drip I’m getting.

What I can’t fathom is why is it clear/clean oil when the rest of the oil in the engine is black (as per diesel engines)?

Is my turbo on its way out? It drives perfectly fine, boosts well etc.

Cheers in advance for any help/insights.

If you have oil in the inlet pipe, pop the pipe to the intercooler off and check for silly amounts of oil inside....they're usually wet-ish, but should not be swimming.

Does she blow any white/blue smoke..??

Do you have an aftermarket air filter.... a K&N for example..??

She’s completely stock no remap, no K&N filter or anything. I popped the passenger side hose off the other day when changing the starter and I got a few drips of oil. I’ve never cleaned it out or anything since I’ve owned it.

She has the occasional puff on a hot start sometimes but other than that she runs “clean”. DPF regens are in within mileage range etc for town driving. Theres nothing that concerns me in regards to the running of it.

Just to clarify incase I wasn't clear. The leak of clear oil is on the ribbed type hose on that connects to the front of the turbo where you would see the impeller blades and comes from the airbox. I can’t fathom why it’s clear when all oil inside the engine is sooty and black. Could it be that shes breathing heavy through the PCV and the vapours are getting “distilled” into the intake pipe? Hence the clean oil?

Perhaps turbo vains are acting like a centrifuge..dirt get chucked one way ..clean oil the other.

the soot ends up as concentrated mud on the walls of the boost pipes and the clear stuff runs out

all the best.mark

It's normal , haven't seen a transit that hasn't got oily residue in it ,
is there a split i the pipe?
That may not be the culprit is the cam cover dry around the injectors??

I’ll have a check of the cam cover after work later and see if I can see anything. Last time I was under there doing the alternator (few weeks ago) I didn’t see anything. I did check that pipe for splits but couldn’t feel any at the time. It may be small. I’ve ordered a new pipe this morning as a precaution though.

Managed to get a bit of time to investigate further this evening. Took the airbox off and the big rubber cover. All as should be under there.
Took the inlet side of the intercooler off, a couple of drips out of that, even got the oil suction pump I use for getting the oil out of the Caterham dry sump and couldn’t get any out the intercooler.
So I’m hoping the turbo is good. New Gates hose on order, it’ll be here soon hopefully.
Also noticed my oil leak is as originally thought, driveshaft oil seal. Been replaced twice at Fords when its been in for CV boots. Still fooking leaks :x
