Some vans are used as work vehicles and the owner/user is in and out of the vehicle often, charging tools, leaving lights on, radio etc....and this can drain the battery to the point where it will fail to start the engine, if fitted, the second battery is a dedicated start battery and is only connected when the ignition is turned on....so even if the front battery is not well, the engine will still start to get you home.
Especially handy if you have a motorhome and tend to use the internal electrics, lights, radio etc when the engine isn't running. The front battery runs everything when the engine isn't running, lights, clock, alarm, radio, central locking etc...this is why the front battery usually fails first. It's not a bad idea to swap them around every 6 months or so to help share the load.
