NS front outer cv boot split

Postby DanMK7uk » Mon May 12, 2025 5:26 pm

Noticed when putting air in tyres,

Splashed fair bit up arch and lower arm

How bad to remove to do a boot and repack the joint ?

Its a job I’ve never undertaken because I haven't got a boot stretcher to get it over the knuckle. Last one I did on my Connect I had to deconstruct the knuckle first. Bloody messy job. Also got the hub nut to deal with at 450nm and the standard being careful with driveshaft seals.

Order a borg and back one ..thicker and durable

Easier to do with the drive shaft out
May as well do inner at the same time

they are a serviceable item (even though no maintenance manual ever tells you that) ...and if you wanted longevity you'd probably take them apart every 60,000 miles, clean, regrease / reboot

... But ..i'm sure this is the same with transit 6/7 as it is with the connect
in which case a whole brand new drive shaft made by borg and beck can be found on ebay for £70 ish

worth thinking about

They're actually 500nm or 370lb-ft.

Pretty sure it says "front suspension" on the table.

The RWD "front spindle" nuts are only 440nm.

The RWD 65mm hub nuts are 425nm.

Either way i do not have a TR to that value, it will be done up with a breaker bar and il have my weetabix, greek yogurt honey and blueberries first .

That bugger wont come loose lol

A 1/2" breaker bar won't be good enough, they snap at anything close to the correct torque....you'll need at least a 3/4" knuckle bar and a goodly amount of pipe on the end.

Just for reference...500nm is 500kg at a distance of 1 meter from the axle. So even with a 2m long knuckle bar, you'll need to weigh or be able to lift 250kg.!

There are "torque multipliers" made for this purpose.
