Head gasket gone, replacement engine

Postby AMG » Wed May 21, 2025 5:13 pm

Hi
My 2008 Transit 85 T280 FWD Refrigerated Van, has a blown head gasket, It's at 160K miles so I have been advised a replacement engine is the way to go, but I'm open to suggestions.
The help I need is recommendations for a transit specialist to carry out this work in the south Wales Area.
All help appreciated.
thanks

Max vehicle weight is 2800kg.

Mine is a T350, so 3500kg max.

Curious....Transit head gaskets very rarely fail...They're not like the "old type" gaskets, they're a layered steel setup......what symptoms are you getting..??

It overheated 1 day out of the blue and I noticed the coolant tank was empty. Since then it’s hard to start, loads of smoke out of the exhaust, mayo on the oil cap and it failed the pressure test.
But I’m sure the specialist would still check before starting the work.

No visible leaks can sometimes be attributed to the EGR cooler internally leaking, you can bypass them mate.

It could well be that…

EGR cooler failure would not give him mayo in the oil ..

Think its quite conclusive on this one that the head gasket has failed, or it has cracked head or block.

all the best.mark

Certainly got the symptoms but not conclusive IMO,

condensation could… short trips..

Regardless

First thing id be doing is bypass cooler, refill and bleed. Go from there.

Cheers
