Hello, Claro, aquí tienes la traducción al inglés: Hi, I'm

Postby Arroyowin » Sat May 24, 2025 10:01 am

Hi everyone, let me introduce myself — I'm Carlos. I have a Transit 2.4 Duratorq and I'm dealing with a metallic noise that's especially noticeable at idle.

I've checked the injectors, and according to the injector specialist, they seem fine, although two of them are returning more diesel than normal — but he said that shouldn't be the cause of the issue.

I inspected all four cylinders with an endoscope camera, and everything looks normal. Could it be connecting rod bearings? Do these engines usually have problems with bearings? Or should I keep looking into the injection system?

The oil has only 1000 km on it — it's Liqui Moly 10W40 — and the level is correct, along with all other fluid levels. I'm going to try uploading a video — the sound is similar to a hydraulic tappet noise. The engine doesn't vibrate excessively and there's no smoke. Thanks in advance, I’d really appreciate your help.

Hi. Really need to know which Transit you have (FWD RWD, which model year etc). Later Transits use 5W30 synthetic oil (maybe different in a hot climate?). A video with sound file would help. Plenty of knowledgeable people on here.

he is in spain so his oil grade should be just about OK, i think.

sometimes it can leak around the injector seals and make tapping noises, this will be accompanied by chuffing out of the oil filler when you remove the cap.

chuffing = like puffing , steam locomotive etc

says in the haynes this oil can be used

Hi, I'm using Liqui Moly 10w40 anti-friction oil and have driven about 1000 km with it. The engine has 400,000 km and it's 4WD. Is it normal for the rod bearings to fail in these engines? Honestly, it sounds like rod knock, but the noise isn't very loud.

We have a workshop at home, we’re mechanics but not specialists in these engines. However, we do have tools and facilities. Any advice or help will be greatly appreciated—and comes with an invitation for a beer on the Costa del Sol in Málaga, haha.

In this case, I don't think it's because of the seals, although now when I reinstall the injectors (already tested), check if there's any blow-by in the oil or around the seals (which I’ll obviously replace with new ones). Thanks a lot for replying!

It does sound like top end to me on that video. Maybe a hydraulic tappet that's not operating correctly?

There are some things I forgot to mention. Since the fault appeared, when the engine is hot, if you turn it off, it won’t start again — that explains what the mechanic said, that two injectors have a high return flow. When it’s cold, it struggles to start, and it didn’t use to have that problem before.
I thought about the tappets, but that wouldn’t cause difficulty starting when cold, right?

the other sound, other than the taps, sounds like the power steering pump . - not a worn one but one with air in the system ..that's the noise mine made when i first did the steering fluid change ..until all the air was out, and it stopped frothing . .

The power steering pump hasn’t given me any problems, at least not so far. I'm trying to figure out whether the noise is coming from the connecting rod bearings or the injection system. I should mention that when I disconnect each injector one by one, besides the engine running on only three cylinders, the tactac noise never disappears. If anyone in this forum can help or has any insight, I’d be extremely grateful. I’ve considered the rail pressure sensor, but I don’t think that would cause this issue. I’m not sure if this pump has another sensor. The diagnostics don’t show any error codes, which points to a mechanical fault — but you never know…

It’s possible, I’m not ruling it out — it could be a lifter. The valves look fine from what I saw with the endoscopic camera, and the timing chain is correctly aligned. It might just be a hydraulic lifter… Thanks!!!
