AFAIK spanner is purely "service interval" reached. (According to a preset value in the PCM).
All other faults should be properly diagnosed via Forscan or other quality brand diagnostics.
A fault code for a specific part does not necessarily mean that part is at fault.
But the system is determining that the values it is seeing for any particular sensor/actuator is not within it's recognised specification.
For example.
Fault with maf sensor.
Is it reading low or high.
Is it not showing a reading at all.
These could actually be faults with:
air filter,
Intake pipes,
Turbo,
Wiring: broken, shorted, or corrosion which can cause a difference in the signal being returned to the PCM due to either increasing or decreasing resistance in the circuit.
