No ignition lights but radio and headlights turn on

Postby Pistonslap » Sat May 31, 2025 9:29 am

Slowly losing the will to live with my 2013 mk7 2.2.
Van had been standing a year, put a new battery on it and it started perfectly and sounded lovely (for a diesel).
Booked in for mot the next day, came to start her up in the morning - nothing.
No ignition lights, only the mileage.
Radio comes on, headlights turn on.
Checked all the battery connections.
Checked the relays.
Still nothing.
It’s stuck on my drive and no auto electricians around this way either (Hornsea).
It’s now been like this for another year and it can’t go on much longer.
Any help or ideas from anyone or anyone who is local?

Check the 5 amp fuses in the passenger fuse box as per this diagram.

66 / 74

If you click on the fuses and description it will highlight it.

Starting with the most simple things first. I know the battery was new...but has it gone flat? It may have been drained overnight and only has enough power now to operate the low consumption items that you mention. Jump leads from a good battery is first test. I know transit's can have an issue with the ignition switch also.

Does it have 2 batteries?

2013 mk7 2.2.
Likely has 2 batteries. Front Aux and start Back.

Battery runs down over night - power supply short to eath. Something left switched on.
Parasitic draw - look it up for the test.

Take the front battery off and trickle charge it over night. Check the back battery V if less than 12 also trickle charge it overnight. Better to take the batteries out but can be done in situ by disconectiog the batteries from the vehicle system. May need to lift the drivers seat out of the way to get at them.

Your post indicates it is a camper. If so they usually have add ons to the electrical system - you'll need to find out what they are.

It has 2 batteries and nothing to do with the camper is connected to it this is completely independent to that side.
Both batteries are full and fully charged.
5amp fuse has already been checked and replaced.

Also changed the ignition switch to rule this out too but still no change.

check all the earths from battery to body and engine

ive read here that there is some sort of heavy duty relay type switch near the batteries that switches between them ...also heard there should be click sound when its activated.

But is there live voltage to the fuse with ignition on…!

Check it and report back…

Excellent point by Dan. I tend to check blade fuses, not by removing and looking at the filament, but by taking a mulitimeter and probing the top of the fuse where the metal is exposed. It should have voltage at both points (assuming it's a live circuit). If you have voltage on one side but not the other, the fuse is gone. If no voltage either side...the circuit is broken closer to the source.

Thank you. I’ve got a multimeter at work and I’ll check this tomorrow and report back.
Honestly it’s driving me around the bend!
