Help with Forscan and The Learns

Postby van_man » Tue Jun 03, 2025 6:39 am

Hi all.

Yesterday I decided to go through the huge effort of getting my laptop out and plugging it into the van, Fired up Forscan and had a look around.
I managed to change a setting on the door locks that fixed one problem (yay) and probably figured out why my dome light doesn't work (another yay).
But, what I'm really here about, is that I was trying to do the learns on my van, as I've never done it and don't know the last time it was ever done.

I found that Injector 1 doesn't seem to have any correction factor applied to it, it just reads 0.000 while the other 3 all seem to have some varying amount, dependant on RMP load etc.
Is that normal? it doesn't seem to be in my humble opinion.

Is there a walk through video or guide on how to do this procedure on Forscan?
Do I need a full licence for this? I put the extended licence on yesterday, so I have 2 months of that, which already opened up a few things for me.

Forscan shows that it doesn't seem to get above about 60 degrees when driving, so probably the thermostat partially stuck open? or Oil cooler thermostat perhaps?

The van is a 2001 Mk6, 2.4L RWD

Any and all advice always appreciated, thanks crew!

(Yes, its a huge effort to get the laptop out, I only have 1 computer running Windows (Win 7) software, it has about 3 mins battery life off its umbilical cord and its buried behind my tv cabinet running my media server lol)

Curious as to why you want to do the learns on a Mk6..?? 2001 Mk6 Transits are TDDi and don't have "learns", they have what is essentially a mechanical pump and injectors....The learns are restricted to Euro-4 TDCi Mk7's with a common rail fuel system & electronic injectors.

That's why you cannot find the learns procedure for your van, it simply doesn't apply to Mk6's.

well, there we go! Looks like the only thing getting the learns is me hahaha

Cheers knobby.

So, I guess my question should be adjusted a little, Is it normal to see no correction factor on injector 1, when the other 3 are showing a varying factor?
The van runs a little rich, so I am trying to rectify that.
The air cleaner is 'almost' new, fuel filter was done ~12,000kms ago.
On such a simple diesel, I can't really think where else to adjust to get the fuel mixture less rich?

What makes you think it's running rich..??

My estimated fuel economy (without correction for the slight increase in kms from the speedo pulling up at idle, so it should be higher) shows it around 11.5L/100km, ~750kms to a tank.
I thought these should be closer to 9L/100kms. It's all city driving and empty, but I drive pretty slow for the most part (it amuses me watching people behind me rage lol)
It's also quite black and sooty around the exhaust, towbar and rear bumper.

It's definitely not running at optimum condition at the moment, so I'm just trying to improve it where I can, while respecting it's an old van with 200,000kms on it.
I'm going to be doing Canberra to Brisbane and back 6ish times in a few months, fully loaded as I move house, I don't really want it to be in poor condition for those trips, so best to fix it now.

Black smoke/sooty exhaust is often/usually caused by a boost leak somewhere in the pipework downstream of the turbo...to the inlet manifold....even the intercoolers and manifolds themselves can split and their silicone gaskets can also be an issue. EGR valves stuck open may also be a cause of poorly economy. City driving doesn't help economy either, stop/start driving and using gears other than top gear will all contribute to poor mileage.

The PCM just gives the fuel it "thinks" is required by the engine depending on throttle position, ambient temps, rpm, load etc...if there is a boost leak some of the air which is meant to go into the engine is not making it there and venting off into the atmosphere....so it essentially is not enough air rather than too much fuel. I'd be having a good look at all your boost pipes & hoses, inercooler, manifold etc. Blanking your EGR will possibly help too.

Mk7 M7 2.4 140 gets between 8 and 9L/100km, it also has very close to 200k km on it....so if I take it easy and don't drive like an idiot I can get very close to 950-1000km per tank.

Pkease can I butt in and ask which lead you have for the laptop to van ? I've bought an ELM 327 interface and no connection found comes up. I've tried various (cheapish) scanners which also aren't compatible. Many thanks.

Have you tried using Forscan..?? It's free to download onto a windows laptop. Most readers normally struggle with the Transit protocols.

You have a Mk6 which is "NOT" OBD-II compatible, which means 95% of the newer readers won't work....you need Forscan or IDS.

I have an ELM327 plug, but its quite old. I've had it for 6-7 years.
It has its own USB cable and plug on the end, just plugs straight in.
It was a little temperamental at first, but once I got the drivers installed its been rock solid ever since. Plugged into several cars and worked fine with several different scanner programs.

Forscan is free todownload, you need that for the Transit.
You can soft activate the program with the extended licence, thats free, you just need an email address to sign up.
That'll unlock most of the functionality for 2 months, then if its what you need you can pay the pittance for the full licence

Yes I've got Forscan on the laptop, I think it's the lead I'm struggling with I think.
Like you say its pre obd11 I think.
