MIL light not coming on

Postby Rusty white elephant » Wed Jun 04, 2025 2:12 pm

Hi , I have recently bought a 2.4 Mk7 t350, 2011, ex CAT fleet service vehicle and I believe I have a problem with the instrument cluster. When I turn the ignition on the MIL light doesn't come on like it does on my car. At first I thought it was going to be a function of the info display but as I did an OBD read and found a MAF error which I think should cause the MIL light to illuminate .
For a while I couldn't find where on the dashboard it was supposed to be (no information in the owner handbook) but with the aid of a bright torch I see the symbol next to the gen and oil lights.

Is there anyway the light could have been disabled in the software by a fancy OBD tool ?

Is part of its previous life it has a fancy 3.5kW 110V / welding generator upgrade with separate alternator wired in which has been disabled (butchered) and there are lots of now redundant wiring still in place, looking at the manufacturer web site, it interfaced wii the engine electronic systems .
Any help gratefully received. Thanks Lloyd.

Because the MIL light would be an MOT fail, it could be that some bright spark has covered the light to stop it showing on the dash, although a vigilant MOT inspector would expect it to light up and go out at key-on.

I'm dreading the possibility that it's an led failure, a covering up sounds like it's less hassle but I doubt I'll be that lucky.
I have seen other posts where people cut wires behind the Speedo to stop the brake wear light coming on, is there a possibility something like that could inhibit the MIL light.
I have seen posts where people change the LEDs in the Speedo to change the backlight colour and it looks like a fiddly job, what colour should the MIL led be, in the good old days the used bulbs and coloured filters.

I definitely think someone was hiding something as the fuse had been removed causing the MAF fault and now the engine surges on idle however there are no fault codes.

It is also possible that this fancy welding generator inverter monitors the MIL status and shuts down in the event of engine problems.

I don't know the wiring on the transit but would expect the MIL to be controld directly from the dash using signals on the CAB Bus ( no seperate wire )

What are you reading it with, most tools won't read all transit codes. You need forscan.

Hi, currently I am using Ford diag to read codes, it works we on my 03 Mondeo giving access to all systems and enabling injector re codes. It automatically connects to the engine management system and I can view a lot of sensors and see real time fuel rail pressure and SCV duty cycle etc. I haven't tried reading the GEM (general electronics module as it was called on the Mondeo) .
At the moment I don't have any error codes to trigger the light so I was going to disconnect the MAF to make one.

I haven't removed the instrument cluster to inspect it for tampering but it doesn't look properly fitted by the gap around the binnacle. I can't imagine it would be easy to cover the MIL light without it being obvious unless it's been done internally, which sounds like a lot of effort to go too compared to fixing the MAF fuse which was the problem I found ( not even a broken wire in the loom) .

Cheers Lloyd
