Starter clicking

Hi guys, replaced my lazy starter today.

Now the van starts up rapid but im finding every few starts the starter will click click click try again and its good again…

Connections to starter / alternator i cleaned all up during replacement and all tight.

Battery is few months old.

Anything i can check ? Does the clicking suggest possible bad (new starter) or is it more possible lack of supply to it ?

Not a job i want to do twice ! Was bit awkward

If you tried all the connections, cables, earth etc

Then take the starter motor out and have a look at the ring gear .. it will be worn in one place only, if it's the cause .. take a file to it .. get the burrs off ./ or replace the ring gear..... gearbox out job.

And if identical, you could swap over the old pinion to the new starter, see if that helps .. as it will be worn into the ring gear and a harmonic match.

Is it a click or a grating sound? If an ugly sound then as metalworker states, it could be a worn section of ring gear (engines tend to stop in roughly the same place on the best compression). If it's just a click and you've eliminated the connections including a good engine earth, then it may be an internal fault with the starter. The solenoid is engaging but not completing the circuit to the motor.

Not done it today so hoping it was just sticking from sat on shelf for months as someone else suggested on my duplicate post.

Doiuble check the positions of the 2 bolts, I mounted one time the lower earth wire holding bolt not ligned. Then fit another startermotor to test. Or replace the relais.
