No power steering on start up

Hello guys,

A friend of mine has a euro 4 mk7 fwd… but not on the forum himself. Said id ask for him.

He reports when starting up, and at first taking off the steering is heavy once moving the power steering kicks in…

Got fluid in reservoir, said it looks dark so advised him to change it for a kick off as part of good service/ maintenance.

Any other possibilities ? Sticking pump perhaps ? No squeaks / slipping belt type noises…

Yes start by changing the oil if that doesn’t work could be pump getting weak or the balljoints tightening up Jack it up before starting the engine and see if there is anything that feels amiss

The balljoint is a slim chance but a possibility go for the oil first

Will more than likely be the rack itself...the internal seals leak when standing for several hours or overnight....and when starting from cold you have the same pressure on each side of the ram....once the steering pump starts, the pressures slowly come good and the steering returns to normal.
